Oleksiy Krutykh put down his racket after the first round of his debut Grand Slam tournament.
On Monday, January 16, the first tournament of the “Grand Slam” series – Australian Open-2023 – started.
Six representatives of Ukraine made it to the main draw of the tournament: Angelina Kalinina, Marta Kostyuk, Kateryna Baindl, Dayana Yastremska and Lesya Tsurenko in the women’s singles, as well as Oleksiy Krutyh – in the men’s.
For Oleksiy, it was the debut tournament of the “Grand Slam” series. Unfortunately, the Ukrainian failed to make it to the second round of the competition.
Krutikh lost in four sets to Diego Schwartzman from Argentina.
Australian Open-2023. First round
Diego Shvartsman (Argentina) – Oleksiy Krutyh (Ukraine) – 6:4, 6:7 (8), 6:3, 7:6 (5)
The meeting lasted three hours and 57 minutes. The second game remained behind the Ukrainian, which Krutyh took on a tiebreak (8:6). The fate of the meeting was decided in the fourth set, where Oleksiy lost the tiebreak (5:7).
Let’s add that Yastremska and Tsurenko also left in the first round of the Australian Open-2023. Dayana lost in two sets to Olena Ostapenko from Latvia, and Lesia lost to Karolina Muhova from the Czech Republic.
Thus, three athletes remained from the representatives of Ukraine at the Australian Open tennis championship – Kateryna Byndl, Marta Kostyuk and Angelina Kalinina.
In the next round, Kalinin will meet Petra Kvitova, Kostyuk will play Olivia Gadecki, and Beindl will face McNally. All matches are scheduled for Wednesday, January 18.
