January 15 marks 15 years since Steve Jobs introduced the first MacBook Air laptop at Macworld Expo 2008 in San Francisco. At the time, Apple advertised the MacBook Air as “the thinnest laptop in the world.”
“We’ve created the thinnest laptop in the world without sacrificing a full-size keyboard or a full-size 13-inch display,” Jobs said in a January 2008 press release announcing the MacBook Air. “When you first see MacBook Air, it’s hard to believe that it’s a high-performance laptop with a full-size keyboard and display. But it is so.”
The original 13-inch MacBook Air had a hinged tray on the right side that provided access to a single USB port, a headphone jack, and a Micro-DVI port for connecting an external display. It was Apple’s first laptop with a multi-touch trackpad, no CD/DVD drive, and SSD upgradeability. US prices started at $1,799 for a configuration with a 1.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB of RAM, and 80GB of storage.
Apple now offers the completely redesigned MacBook Air with the M2 chip, released last July, and continues to sell the version with the M1 chip. Due to the use of energy-efficient processors, MacBook Air no longer requires the use of a fan in the cooling system. While the original MacBook Air was 0.16 inches (4 mm) at its thinnest and 0.76 inches (19.3 mm) at its thickest, the latest MacBook Air has a flatter design with the same thickness of 0.44 inches ( 11.2 mm).
