Samsung continues the megapixel race for mobile device cameras and introduced the new 200-megapixel ISOCELL HP2 sensor. It’s quite large for a smartphone, a 1/1.3-inch sensor (about 12 mm diagonal) with 0.6 micron pixels.
The new sensor captures more light than previous generation sensors. Thanks to the Dual Vertical Transfer Gate (D-VTG) technology, the manufacturer was able to double the number of electrons available from each photodiode, increasing the full pixel capacity by more than 33%. This way, the pixel can hold more charge until saturation, reducing overexposure and improving color reproduction in bright light conditions.
The sensor is capable of combining 4 adjacent pixels into one large pixel measuring 1.2 μm or combining 16 pixels into one even larger pixel measuring 2.4 μm. In such cases, the sensor is capable of taking pictures with a resolution of 50 MP and 12.5 MP, respectively. This should provide the best low-light performance.
The Samsung ISOCELL HP2 sensor can shoot up to 8K video at 30fps in 50MP mode (compared to 24fps on the Galaxy S22). It also uses Smart-ISO Pro to capture 12.5MP HDR images and 4K HDR at up to 60fps. Each pixel acts as a focusing agent, ensuring fast autofocus even in low-light conditions.

Previous rumors indicated that the flagship smartphone Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra will receive a 200-megapixel main camera sensor. This is likely to be the new ISOCELL HP2 sensor as it has already gone into mass production. The presentation of smartphones of the Galaxy S23 series is expected on February 1.
