Cleverly intends to use the ties between the countries “to ensure that in the end the Ukrainian people will win.”
British Foreign Minister James Cleverley begins a two-day trip to the USA and Canada.
According to Sky News, it is expected that Cleverly will convince the allies to transfer more combat funds to Ukraine.
“The UK, the US and Canada have always stood by each other when it mattered, defending the rules-based order for almost 80 years. Today we are united against Putin’s illegal war and we will continue to use our uniquely strong defense and security ties , to ensure that in the end the Ukrainian people will win,” Cleverly said on the eve of the trip.
Cleverley is expected to hold a meeting with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken in the US. The day before, Defense Minister Ben Wallace announced that Great Britain would send tanks, artillery guns and armored vehicles to Ukraine. According to Sky News, Cleverley intends to use this to persuade Americans and Canadians to follow his country’s example.
“It is expected that he will point out the need to provide the Ukrainians with appropriate combat equipment as soon as possible so that they can win the war,” the newspaper writes.
In addition to Ukraine, Cleverley is expected to discuss trade between the United Kingdom and the United States and the country’s entry into the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), of which Canada is one of the signatories.
British military aid to Ukraine
On January 14, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, in a conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi, announced the provision of Challenger 2 tanks and additional artillery systems to Ukraine. Great Britain will become the first country in Europe to officially transfer tanks to Ukraine.
According to the media, it is about providing 12 tanks. Four Challenger 2s in the first place, eight more in the near future. Military experts stressed that Britain’s decision to provide its tanks should encourage Germany to do the same.
On January 16, British Defense Minister Ben Wallace announced that Great Britain would give Ukraine one of the largest packages of military aid. In addition to the squadron of Challenger 2 tanks, we are talking about 100 thousand artillery shells, 100 advanced missiles, UAVs, 100 units of armored vehicles, etc.
