We continue the review of the series of energy-efficient AMD Ryzen CPUs. The ITC editors tested the capabilities of the new AMD Ryzen 7 7700 in popular usage scenarios. Conducted a number of game and synthetic tests, measured power consumption under load. We will also compare the performance of this model with the older Ryzen 97900.

The specified TDP of the Ryzen 7 7700 processor is only a baseline value. Officially, it is equal to 65 W. As in the case of Ryzen 9 7900, ideal conditions were created for benchmarks.
To accurately test all the capabilities of the CPU, we removed the TDP limits. The theoretical maximum power was also tested. MSI’s motherboard and top-of-the-line cooling made it possible.
Test stand
The MSI B650 Mortar Wi-Fi did a great job with such a cool processor. Its power is enough for any CPU. Cool, powerful and functional motherboard with intuitive BIOS. It also supports overclocking and works with high RAM frequencies. For processors without the X index, it makes no sense to install a more powerful board, although this model tames the Ryzen 7700X and 7900X.
Kingston Fury DDR5 6000 CL36 was used as RAM. It worked stably at a frequency of 6000 MHz, despite the fact that officially (on the manufacturer’s website) the processor supports DDR5-5200. With such RAM, it was possible to get the most out of this CPU.
AMD recommends using the AMD Wraith Prism cooling system with the Ryzen 7 7700. That’s a big enough cooler to handle that CPU. But the editors decided to test the maximum performance without TDP limits. That’s why we took MSI MPG CoreLiquid K360 water cooling. The top three-section “vodyanka” is capable of mounting any modern CPUs. It is also suitable for such monsters as Ryzen 97950X.
Storage devices SSD Kingston A2000 1 TB and SSD Kingston A400 480 GB.
For games, they took the most powerful modern Radeon. This video card will complement the new Ryzen processors. It performed well in 4K resolution, but in the CPU review we will go down to 1080p.

Work productivity
The older model Ryzen 9 is often of interest to professionals for work tasks, while Ryzen 5 is chosen primarily for video games. AMD Ryzen 7770 0 is the middle ground and offers a good balance. Is it really so? We checked the theoretical power of the novelty in popular benchmarks and work programs.
Cinebench R23
During testing in Cinebench R23 got results a little worse than competitors. However, the AMD Ryzen 7 7700 consumed up to 130 W during the stress tests. This is significantly less than Intel. At the same time, the older Ryzen 9 7900 model showed the best power per unit of consumed energy.
Geekbench 5
The popular Geekbench test shows not very encouraging results. The uncapped Ryzen 7 7700 scores significantly less than the 65W capped Ryzen 9 7900. This is especially noticeable in the multi-core test. Against the background of its competitor Intel Core i5-13600K, the new R7 7700 is also not very successful.

The speed of the browser benchmarks is good, but the Intel systems are faster. Sometimes laptops with Intel Core 12 generation show the best result. It is difficult to say what this is connected with, because the single-core power of the new AMD processors is excellent. AMD Ryzen 7 7700 loses to competitors in this field.

Blender’s test results show an advantage over the recent top-of-the-line AMD Ryzen 5800X processor. With its level of power consumption, Ryzen 7 7700 looks like a much better option than representatives of Zen 3. But against the background of Intel 13 Gen and R9 7900, it loses ground.

We tested video games with the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX 24 GB video card. The graphics adapter is very powerful and will allow you to learn about the capabilities of this CPU. Games were tested at 1080p resolution.
A Plague Tale Requiem
A Plague Tale Requiem is demanding on the graphics card. Ultra settings make the Radeon RX 7900 XTX work at 100%. It makes no sense to go down to 720p.
AC Valhalla
AC Valhalla averages 230 FPS, which is too much even for a single-player project.
APEX Legends
APEX can be played with FPS 290-300. It will not be possible to achieve more, because this is the limit of the game. Ideal for owners of 240-300 Hz monitors.

In Control, we rely on the capabilities of the engine in the same way. 240 FPS is the maximum you can get.

Kozaka 3’s strategy depends on single-core power. The R7 7700 scores just a few FPS behind the R9 7900.
CS GO
CS:GO is famous for its excellent protection against cheats. That is why the game does not allow MSI Afterburner monitoring to be displayed. Steam counter was used. Got 300-370 FPS in loaded scenes. 600-700 FPS in corridors. The dream of an e-sportsman.
DOOM Eternal
Demon Extermination Simulator loads any video card. Unfortunately, the toy does not support FSR. Even a resolution of 720p forces the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX graphics card to work at 100%. Low settings don’t really save the day. 300-400 FPS guaranteed.
F1 2021
The simulator of the fastest racing discipline F1 2021 works perfectly. Over 400 FPS with ultra settings. It remains to purchase a 360-480 Hz monitor for full immersion.
MFS 2020
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 is running smoothly. Although the Ryzen 9 7900 allows you to get several FPS more in all scenarios.
PUBG
For the most accurate PUBG tests, we used a recording. The screenshot shows a crowded place with a lot of players. We get a little less than 240 frames per second.
The Matrix Awakens
Unreal Engine 5 demo impresses with the quality of the graphics. But the requirements are too high. AMD Ryzen 7 7700 is far from stable 60 FPS. The older Ryzen 9 7900 model also did not cope with the task.
Valorant
Cartoon shooter has a specific visual style and low requirements. A player will see 600-700 FPS depending on the map, number of players, etc.
Warzone 2.0
The game Call of Duty Warzone 2.0 has high requirements for the processor component. It needs many powerful cores. The R7 7700 showed a much weaker result than the R9 7900. But this is still good enough for 144 Hz monitors.
Gaming performance
We compare the performance of Ryzen 7 7700 with Ryzen 9 7900 in game scenarios. Note that many toys do not have built-in benchmarks, and FPS may have an error. This allowed an advantage in certain scenes over the R9 7900. Although these few FPS are only within the margin of error. CPU-hungry games show a significant difference, like Call of Duty Warzone 2.0.
Energy consumption and heating
“Water cooler” MSI MPG Coreliquid K360 belongs to elite cooling systems. She was a little noisy, but she coped with the job perfectly. The maximum specified temperature was 74 °С. During games, the fans noticeably reduce their speed. The temperature in typical tasks is 50–65 °С. We remind you that these tests were conducted without performance restrictions.
You can not worry about the limits of 65 W. The processor will lose some power, but it will become incredibly cold. The AMD Wraith Prism system can easily handle it.
AIDA 64
During the AIDA 64 stress tests, the entire PC consumed about 200 watts. The sensor recorded that the processor accounted for more than half of this power.
Desktop
And again the “idling” problems, like the R9 7900. When idle, the system consumes about 100 watts. This is quite a lot, because the Intel Core i7-10700K+RX 7900 XTX+Asus Z490 Prime consumed only 45-50 W.
Cinebench loads the processor the most. The entire PC consumed 223 W during the Multi Core and 116 W during the Single Core tests. In games, the indicator is much higher, because the Radeon RX 7900 XTX GPU was in the system.

Competitors
The AMD Ryzen 7 7700 has much stronger competition than the older model. First of all, let’s talk about the price tag. The officially declared cost of the novelty is $329. The 7700 X version will cost you $399. In Ukraine, Ryzen 7 7700X is sold for about UAH 14,000.
Ryzen 5000 representatives are also not bad, but have significantly worse performance per core. Instead of Ryzen 7 7700 X, you can buy Ryzen 7 5800X3D, and the hero of the review promises to be cheaper.
The Ryzen 7 7700 is really good in AMD’s home market. But compared to Intel, it is already losing ground. The older Ryzen 9 7900 model looked much more interesting to potential buyers. The biggest challenge for the R7 7700 is the Intel Core i5-13600K with an official price of $319.
Intel’s representative has higher power and cooling requirements, but also comes out ahead in multi-core performance. The price is 13600K from 13000 UAH in Ukraine. Intel Core i5-12600K is even cheaper – from UAH 11,000. Intel’s advantage is having cheaper motherboards with DDR4 support. This is what scares away many potential buyers of the AM5 socket.
If the price tags of Ryzen 7 7700 in Ukraine will be greatly inflated compared to the official ones, then it can stay in warehouses for a long time. This model does not look as impressive as the R9 7900. The performance per watt is still good, but its fate in our market will be decided only by the price.

Conclusion:
With a limit of 65 W, the processor will still show a decent level of performance. This is the main difference from competitors. If we talk about the maximum power, then it loses to the top Intel Core i5 12-13 generation. For its official price, the R7 7700 is not bad, but not ideal. Analogues from Intel look more successful.
When compared to the Ryzen 9 7900, the situation is also not in favor of the Ryzen 7 7700. Some video games depend on the power of the CPU, so they received a significant advantage of the older CPU. In all work tasks, the more expensive model shows the best results. The cost of the entire AM5 system is still high. Against the background of expensive motherboards and DDR5 memory, overpaying $ 100 for the R9 7900 is not a problem. Ryzen 7 7700 is unlikely to be chosen by enthusiasts, and for most gamers it is quite expensive.
AMD Ryzen 7 7700 will not disappoint its owner, because it will allow you to play the most demanding AAA toys, work with professional software, etc. But for its price, it will not be easy for him to make his way into the system units and the hearts of their owners.
