Saint Philip was a boyar family, born in 1507. His parents taught him the sciences and a pious way of life, so Philip read the Holy Scriptures from an early age. After completing his education, he entered the service at the court of Tsar John the Terrible, but worldly life burdened him, so soon the saint went to the Solovetsky monastery.

There he took the rank of abbot and did a lot for the holy monastery. When John the Terrible called him to him for advice, Philip saw that the king had already changed – he had become distrustful and cruel. Reluctantly, the saint accepted the rank of metropolitan, delivered a touching speech at the liturgy, and for a short while silence reigned in Moscow.

But then the oprichniks staged bloodshed again, Philip tried to deceive the king, but he did not listen. Then, during the service, the saint refused John the Terrible a blessing, for which the king became angry, began to look for an excuse to deprive the saint of honors, and soon found him. Saint Philip was stripped of his dignity, dressed in monastic clothes and sent to a monastery, where he died.

In honor of St. Philip, a national holiday is celebrated today on January 22 – Philip’s Day.

Later, he was elected abbot, during his life he performed many miracles. Before his death, he commanded his brothers not to give in to temptations and not to seek earthly goods, but to believe in the Lord and think about the future.
