On this day, we celebrate two important holidays – the proclamation of the Ukrainian People’s Republic and the Act of Unification of Ukrainian Lands. 105 years ago, on January 22, Ukrainians proclaimed the independence of their state and created the Ukrainian People’s Republic, and a year later the Act of Unification of the Ukrainian People’s Republic and the People’s Republic of Ukraine took place. What is the National Assembly Day of Ukraine – the history of the holiday

The Day of the Unity of Ukraine is a holiday in honor of the declaration of the First Independence and the Act of Reunification of the Ukrainian People’s Republic (UNR) and the Western Ukrainian People’s Republic (ZUNR).

On January 22, 1918, independence was proclaimed by the IV Universal of the Ukrainian Central Rada, and a year later, in 1919, on the same day, on Sofia Square in Kyiv, the official unification of the Ukrainian People’s Republic and the West Ukrainian People’s Republic took place. Thus, for the first time in many centuries, the historical Ukrainian regions were united into one state.

From now on, the parts of the united Ukraine separated from each other for centuries – the Western Ukrainian People’s Republic (Galichyna, Bukovyna, Hungarian Rus) and Trans-Dnieper Greater Ukraine – will merge together. Unfortunately, the unification of the republics of the UNR and ZUNR did not take place, but the very process of the proclamation affected the political situation in the country.

The Day of the Assembly of Ukraine – facts

During the time of the Soviet regime, the Day of Sobornosty was not celebrated, moreover, any mention of it was destroyed, this day was considered a “counter-revolutionary holiday”. The first official celebration took place in 1939, in the city of Khust, the capital of Carpathian Ukraine. At that time, these lands were part of Czechoslovakia. More than 30,000 Ukrainians came to the demonstration – this is how Sobornosti Day became the largest Ukrainian event in 20 years.

At the state level, the Day of the Assembly of Ukraine was celebrated for the first time in 1999 after the decree of the current president, Leonid Kuchma. However, in 2011, by the decree of President Viktor Yanukovych, the Day of Unity was canceled on the official level, as well as the Day of Freedom on November 22 – instead, the Day of Unity and Freedom was started on January 22. However, already in 2014, by the presidential decree of Petro Poroshenko, the Day of the Assembly of Ukraine was restored.

National Assembly Day of Ukraine – traditions of the holiday

The main tradition on the Day of Sobornosty is a living chain, which Ukrainians build, symbolizing the unification of Ukrainian lands and state unity. The history of this tradition begins in 1990 – then the living chain stretched from Kyiv to Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk, Stryi, Ternopil, Zhytomyr and Rivne. According to various estimates, about three million people took part in the action.

Since then, it has become a good tradition, which is held annually in different parts of Ukraine. In Kyiv, on January 22, the two banks of the Dnieper – the left and the right – are “connected” in this way, symbolizing the unification of the East and West of Ukraine.
