Microsoft is working on a major update to Explorer in Windows 11. It should improve the program’s user interface and add new features. According to Windows Central, the redesigned application will receive a modern design that matches the look and feel of Windows 11, as well as features for deeper integration with Microsoft 365 and OneDrive.
Internal layouts of the updated Explorer can already be found online. They show off a redesigned header, an updated search box, and a new home button. The Explorer home page provides deeper integration with Microsoft 365, displaying large document thumbnails that include items related to meetings, downloads, and peer comments.
The user interface changes are minor, but more closely follow the general design of Windows 11 with rounded buttons and more touch-friendly elements. Microsoft hasn’t made any major changes to File Explorer since Windows 8. The last modification was released last October to support tabs in Windows 11, the latest major update.
Microsoft is also reportedly working on a new Explorer gallery area that will include large photo previews. Additionally, Microsoft is working on a tags feature for Explorer that will help you tag and organize files.

Microsoft itself has not yet officially announced these changes to Explorer. However, parts of the code related to these changes were discovered in the latest test builds of Windows 11. These innovations are expected to be available by the end of 2023.
