It is noted that the restrictions will remain in place for at least another six months.
The ambassadors of the European Union approved the extension of all economic sanctions against the Russian Federation due to the war in Ukraine. The restrictions will remain in effect for at least another six months.
“EU ambassadors have officially given the green light to extend all EU economic sanctions against Russia for another six months,” Radio Liberty’s Brussels correspondent Rikard Jozwiak said on Twitter.
It is noted that the decision applies, in particular, to sanctions that were introduced back in 2014.
Sanctions against Russia – what is known
The countries of the European Union have already introduced nine packages of sanctions against the Russian Federation and do not plan to stop as long as Moscow tries to take over Ukraine.
At the beginning of December 2022, the Council of the EU decided to set the maximum price for oil from Russia at the level of 60 USD per barrel. The decision was necessary to limit Moscow’s income and make it more difficult to finance the war against Ukraine.
According to Reuters, Poland and Lithuania are trying to achieve sanctions against the nuclear sector of the Russian Federation. Diplomats are finding it increasingly difficult to secure the necessary unanimity to introduce additional restrictions.
