Estimates of the total number of websites in the world vary, but in 2023 there will be around 2 billion. Visual Capitalist used data from SimilarWeb and created an infographic ranking the 50 most popular in the world.
The most popular sites
Google tops the list with more than 3.5 billion searches per day, followed by YouTube, which together receive the most monthly visits (85.1 billion and 33 billion respectively) than the next 48 sites on the list combined.
The video platform YouTube, also owned by Google, is the second largest search engine in the world and also ranks second among sites in terms of duration of visits (led by China’s Bilibili).

YouTube named the most popular videos and channels in 2022
Next in the list are giant social networks: Facebook (17.8 billion), Instagram (6.1 billion) and Twitter (6.8 billion).

Visual Capitalist published a similar ranking last year, but since then Walmart and PayPal have dropped out of the ranking. Notable new participants include Samsung (1.4 billion) and the New York Times (702.2 million).
Traffic geography
The US is still the base of the main traffic flow for many of the world’s largest websites, occupying 30 places in this ranking. Of these 30 sites, half are operated by major tech companies such as Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, and Netflix. Russia, China, Japan and South Korea round out the top five countries with the most traffic.
Distribution by categories
11 of the 50 most popular sites are news sites, 10 are social networks, and 6 are in the “other” category. The latter includes Aaj Tak and Globo, which are major media outlets in India and Brazil respectively, while the remaining four sites – XVideos, PornHub, XHamster and XNXX – specialize in “adult content” and are located in different countries. They are often called “Tube sites” because they are modeled after YouTube.
Earlier, Google named the most popular searches of 2022 in the world as “Ukraine”, “Wordle”, “Queen Elizabeth” and “Cricket”. Google’s local Ukrainian rating includes the queries “Map of air alarms”, “Arestovych”, “Zhyrinovsky”, “Gostomel”, “Swift”, “Lendlease”, “Blackout” and others.
