A large-scale war has been going on for 12 months. Adapting to what is happening is becoming more and more difficult. The enemy is terrorizing with massive attacks, so we do not feel safe even at home. After all, no one guarantees safety, the availability of electricity, water, communication and the network – things that used to be under our control.

How to deal with the loss of control due to war, whether it is possible to accept a difficult reality and what we can control even in the conditions of a full-scale war, psychotherapist Oleg Chaban told on the air “Breakfast with 1+1”.

First of all, he talked about what Ukrainians got as a result of the war: we began to appreciate things that we did not even think about before – a house, warm water, friends, the presence of light. This is called post-traumatic growth.

Host Lyudmila Barbir noted that now Ukrainians are unable to control many things in their lives due to constant attacks by the Russian Federation. Therefore, she asked Chaban how to rebuild himself so that it does not result in suffering. The psychotherapist drew attention to the fact that a person can really lose something, but it is necessary to immediately assess what he got and what is left. As an example, he mentioned a situation when a woman, for example, lost her job. But new opportunities opened up for her: maybe it’s time to become a mother, take time for herself, finally get some sleep.

Chaban also said that now Ukrainians are at the stage of aggression, anger, rage and depression due to the full-scale aggression of the Russian Federation. In addition, he advised to launch only positive events around him: “It’s a boomerang: what we launch, that’s what we get.”

A psychotherapist on the stages of perception of war by Ukrainians

Earlier, psychotherapist Spartak Subota said that the most difficult stage – the stage of anxiety – has already been passed. And now it is already the stage of adaptation to the war: some people have gone abroad, and some have adapted and are in a kind of “mobilized” state all the time. And the third stage – exhaustion occurs only when a person could not withstand the load.

The expert advised each person to make their own plans, protect their psychological and physical health, and help the Armed Forces.
