It is about the ability to use a smartphone as a webcam or microphone without third-party applications.
Smartphones running Android will have a function to use the gadget as a USB webcam for a computer. Just like Apple’s Continuity Camera only as a universal standard.
According to Android expert and Esper editor Mishaal Rahman, the innovation will become part of Android with the release of Android 14 later this year.
It should be noted that using the phone as a webcam became especially popular during the pandemic, but on Android it was usually necessary to install another application for this – for example, DroidCam. Now Google adds support for such an option in the operating system itself.
You can connect a smartphone or tablet to a computer via USB. After that, the device will start functioning as a web server thanks to the built-in DeviceAsWebcam service. This format is universal and is used by most modern USB webcams.
The new functions that Android 14 will receive are known
Earlier it became known that Android smartphones with the release of Android 14 will have better satellite communication than the new iPhones. It will allow not only to send an SOS signal, but also to exchange messages almost anywhere in the world,
Another useful function is the function of translating illegible doctor’s handwriting. For now, it only works in Hindi (India), but will become widely available with the release of Android 14.
As a reminder, the current Android version number 13 was released in August 2022. This time, there were not many changes – the developers focused on privacy and design improvement.
