World IT Abbreviations

The global IT market is going through bad times. For example, tech giants Amazon, Meta, Tesla, Twitter and others are cutting staff. In Ukraine, the IT industry is also going through a difficult period, going through changes and forced layoffs – Whaleapp lays off newbies, Genesis says goodbye to non-technical specialists, the two largest outsourcing companies in Ukraine were forced to significantly reduce staff. You and I are observing the global trend of reducing IT specialists.

Guide to finding a job in IT against the background of cuts: who is needed, requirements for candidates, expert advice

Vacancies in the IT sector have significantly decreased. In Ukraine, more than 12 applicants apply for one job, and if we talk about juniors, then all 30. More and more beginners and middle specialists face a shortage of vacancies. Thus, according to the NBU, as of the fourth quarter of 2022, about 200,000 specialists are applying for approximately 15,000 IT vacancies in Ukraine. Experts predict that by the end of 2023, the overall unemployment rate will increase to 30% of the population.

Is it possible to get a job under the existing conditions? Spoiler: yes, although not with a 100% chance.

What will happen on the IT market and what are the current trends

Despite the war, the Ukrainian IT industry is afloat. Moreover, it is now developing and increasing the export of digital products abroad.

Thanks to this, more and more foreign currency is coming to the country’s budget, which is very good in modern conditions. The NBU reports that exports increased by 28% in the first quarter of 2022 alone. Almost two months of war-free life affected this figure, and it surpassed the same figures in 2021.

Moreover, the Ministry of Economy recently reported on the positive dynamics of foreign trade – in 2023, exports of goods and services will grow by at least 7.2%. We will see a lot of changes, so it is too early to despair.

As for the trends of the Ukrainian IT market, it is changing significantly. Our companies are quite well adapted to remote work and flexible schedules, but foreign clients fear cooperation with Ukrainian specialists and refuse it. At the same time, they choose to cooperate with developers in India and other Asian countries.

Some of the client companies divided the country map according to conditional risks for their business. Some customers are not sure that the energy situation in the country will allow our specialists to remain efficient, although most offices are equipped with generators and Starlink.

At the beginning of 2023, IT organizations emphasize the following:

  • communicate with clients and build closer ties with them;
  • ensure uninterrupted work of colleagues;
  • update services and technologies;
  • ready for the migration of workers;
  • adhere to deadlines;
  • work according to the CI/CD concept;
  • increase the quality of digital goods.

That is why the demand for juns and meddles has decreased significantly. Companies strive to de-risk and close projects on time and with the highest quality possible in a war-torn environment. Although not everything is as bad as it seems at first glance. Ukrainians are a nation that knows how to “play tactics” very well, quickly adapting to those conditions, under which, without exaggeration, no one else simply could not stand it. The picture looks like industry develops not thanks to, but contrary to: jobs are created that open up access to vacancies for new candidates.

Demand for the profession

Let’s go through the market analysis according to data from Hurma, Djinni and INCO. Currently, Ukrainian IT companies are most often looking for specialists in the following technologies:

  • JavaScript;
  • Java;
  • DevOps;
  • Node.js;
  • C#/.NET;
  • PHP.

At the same time, candidates most often respond to:

  • JavaScript;
  • QA;
  • UI/UX;
  • Recruiter;
  • project manager.

If you are on the following list, then companies want to find you the most:

  • Java;
  • JavaScript;
  • DevOps.

As we can see, there is demand in 2023 as well, but with one nuance. Currently, most companies are looking for specialists at the middle level and above and offer them fairly favorable conditions. Moreover, there is still not always a demand even for middle – fewer and fewer companies pay attention to junior and middle level specialists and choose senior.

What will happen next with wages

Despite the full-scale invasion of Russia, the median salaries of IT professionals have increased slightly. This fact was confirmed to us by both candidates and recruiters in our survey, in which more than 50 people participated.

But it is too early to rejoice: although salaries have increased, there is a possibility that this is a temporary trend. Mass layoffs and the search for specialists in other countries due to the war in Ukraine affected not only the number of vacancies, but also the level of compensation. It will either at least remain the same in 2023, or it will gradually decrease due to the lack of offers on the market and great competition.

As the skill level increases, the salary increases significantly, i.e.:

  • junior can receive from $500 to $1.5 thousand. (Median salary);
  • middle – from $1.3 thousand to $2.8 thousand;
  • team/tech lead and senior receive from $2.5 thousand to $6 thousand. in accordance.

Probably, most people now have a question: “Should I no longer wait for a promotion or a better salary?” And although there is no answer to this question right now, there is something that should comfort you: salaries will increase one hundred percent immediately after victory. The reason will be foreign investments, the return of foreign companies to Ukraine, the recovery of the country and many other factors. One way or another, the modern IT market is undergoing many positive changes, so do not despair. It is better to work for victory and believe in the future of Ukraine.

What are the current problems facing candidates and how to deal with them

Guide to finding a job in IT against the background of cuts: who is needed, requirements for candidates, expert advice

First of all, the shortage of vacancies in some specialties, caused by the war and the general economic situation, has a negative effect on modern IT. Fewer vacancies are created, the requirements for candidates and the competition for a workplace are increasing. In such conditions, it is quite difficult to get a job in a promising position, but it is still possible.

Problem #1 – Lack of some vacancies. It is impossible to fight with her. You can only profitably present your candidacy to HR and then to the employer. How to do it? With the help of a resume. ATS (Applicant Tracking System) algorithms should be taken into account when filling out all fields of the questionnaire. If your resume is fully recognized by ATSGuide to finding a job in IT against the background of cuts: who is needed, requirements for candidates, expert adviceGuide to finding a job in IT against the background of cuts: who is needed, requirements for candidates, expert advicesoftware that allows you to process information in the field of personnel recruitment – this will increase the chances of an interview with 70%. And if it does not pass, then with probability 90% they just won’t write to you.

By the way, if you want to create a resume correctly and quickly, use a modern, convenient designer.

Problem #2 – limited offers and prospects. In today’s conditions, you should not count on too high rates or rapid career growth. Of course, this is not out of the question, but most employers now offer constant wages for larger volumes of work. The only thing is that for the senior level and above, the offers are slightly different, because such specialists for the company are a rather profitable investment in the future.

Problem #3 – Exaggerated requirements for candidates. Nowadays, it is more profitable for companies to hire a specialist with experience than to teach a newbie, sacrificing deadlines, product quality, resources, etc. Our advice is to constantly improve your qualifications, preferably in practice. Especially since special offers are currently available for Ukraine on various educational platforms, where anyone who wants to can learn the basics of the profession even for free.

Actual platforms for finding a job in IT

Those who at least once in their life have used IT job search platforms know that in Ukraine they can be conventionally divided into IT and non-IT. The first are the well-known social network for business LinkedIn, which, despite its advantages, has a lot of limitations for recruiters, and the anonymous job search portal Djinni.

We will not consider unofficial portals, because they are intended for general use, that is, vacancies are published for all areas of employment.
