The corresponding agreement on cooperation between the countries was signed in 1996 with the advent of Ukraine’s independence.

Ukraine has terminated a long-term agreement on cooperation in space exploration with the Russian Federation. The agreement assumed the joint study of outer space, and even their use for “peaceful purposes”.
The government of Ukraine made the relevant decision today, as the representative of the Cabinet of Ministers in the Verkhovna Rada, Taras Melnychuk, reported in his Telegram.
He noted that Ukraine is breaking two agreements with the Russian Federation at once:
- agreement between governments on cooperation in the field of research and use of outer space for peaceful purposes, which was signed on August 27, 1996:
- protocol to this agreement, signed on November 26, 2010.
Termination of agreements with the Russian Federation
The government of Ukraine initiated the rupture of international agreements with the Russian Federation even before the start of a full-scale war in response to the illegal occupation of Crimea by Russian troops.
On December 6, 2018, the Verkhovna Rada adopted the law “On Termination of the Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership between Ukraine and the Russian Federation”. It was later signed by the president. For its part, Moscow criticized the corresponding changes to the Constitution and showed Kyiv that it is specifically getting closer to the EU and NATO.
Already after the start of the full-scale war, the Cabinet of Ministers continued to sever ties with the Russian Federation: from February 24, 2022, Ukraine officially withdrew from many agreements. In particular, the government terminated the agreement on scientific, technical and economic cooperation in the field of atomic energy with Russia.
