At night, the occupiers “heroically” bombed the island, where no one has been for a long time.
On the night of February 11, the Russian occupiers bombed Zmiiny Island in order to test the defense capability of the Armed Forces in this area and at the same time create a convenient excuse for their propaganda to declare another “victory”.
This was emphasized by the head of the United Coordination Press Center of the Defense Forces of Southern Ukraine, Nataliya Gumeniuk, on the air of the telethon.
“The other day they tried to scout, and later they decided to demonstrate their “power” and “presence”. But what did they bomb? What they themselves left there,” Humenyuk said.
According to her, with such actions, Russia is trying to create a favorable information background and give at least some kind of “victory” to its propaganda.
“They are also trying to check our readiness for defense and find out whether we have already set up a powerful bastion there, which they will have to storm again,” the spokeswoman said.
The situation around Zmiiny Island
Located south of Odesa, Zmiiny Island was captured by the Russian invaders on the first day of the invasion. It was here that one of the main slogans of the Ukrainian resistance was born – “Russian warship, go to hell!”
On June 30 – after several months of remote struggle for the island – the occupiers, having suffered heavy losses, decided to evacuate the island. At the same time, a lot of equipment was thrown. They called their escape “A step of goodwill”, which became another well-known meme of this war.
On July 4, the Ukrainian flag was raised over the island again. However, they did not leave the garrison on Zmiino, as it would be threatened by Russian missiles and aircraft.
