In Turkey, more than 4,000 buildings collapsed as a result of the earthquake.
According to the World Health Organization, almost 26 million people were affected in one way or another by the earthquakes that occurred in Turkey and Syria on February 6, 2023.
As reported by Alarabiya News, the number of people killed as a result of natural disasters in these countries has exceeded 25 thousand. In total, 15 million people were affected in one way or another in Turkey, and 11 million people in Syria. Among them, more than five million people were considered particularly vulnerable, including about 350,000 elderly people and more than 1.4 million children.
According to the WHO, in Turkey, where more than 4,000 buildings collapsed as a result of the earthquake, 15 hospitals were partially or severely damaged. At the same time, in Syria, where the health care system has already been destroyed by 12 years of war, at least 20 medical facilities were damaged in the north-west of the country, which was badly affected by the earthquakes.
Earthquakes in Turkey and Syria
On February 6, Turkey and Syria were shaken by two powerful earthquakes with a magnitude higher than seven and tens of aftershocks. According to the latest data, the number of dead has exceeded 25 thousand. The UN predicts that there will be at least twice as many victims.
In one of the Turkish provinces, after the earthquakes, a giant crack formed in the earth’s crust. A gorge about 30 meters deep and about 200 meters wide literally divided an olive field in Hatay province.
Seismologists from the United States noted that two strong earthquakes in the same place after a short period of time from a scientific point of view is an “amazing” and “rare” phenomenon.
