Samsung has released a firmware update for its latest 990 Pro solid-state drives, which should solve the problem of abnormally fast decline in SSD health indicators.
The disadvantage of the update under the number 1B2QJXD7 can be called the lack of reset of the wear percentage counter on the drives affected by the error. Now, if the Samsung 990 Pro diagnostics report significant wear and tear, the firmware update will prevent this, but the performance will remain at the previous level. This may be due to the fact that the error caused accelerated degradation of the disks, or the drive simply cannot tell the difference between the actual and nominal wear of the drive.
You can install the Samsung firmware update using the proprietary Samsung Magician SSD utility (which is not installed by default by all drive owners). The company also offers custom ISO images that can be used for bootable discs or USB drives that download the program.
Previous generation Samsung 980 Pro SSDs have received a firmware update to address another unrelated issue. One of the manufacturers of ready-made systems recently drew attention to a number of problems, expressed a desire to switch to other SSDs in the future.
