Dutch microelectronics manufacturer ASML has accused a former Chinese employee of stealing patented technology. The incident can be interpreted as a violation of export control, however, according to the company, it is not essential for business.
ASML has reported the breach to authorities and is now developing new security measures in light of what happened. The company has not released further details about the episode, and is currently conducting an internal review.
The European company is known for the development of lithography machines used in the production of processors. The technology is critical to the production of microelectronics and is relevant in light of US sanctions against China, which prohibit the transfer of high-tech products to the country. Especially considering the fact that the company actually monopolizes the market. Demand for the company’s products continues to grow, which could make it a target for further attacks.
The Netherlands and Japan recently joined the United States in restricting the sale of computer chips to China. ASML has previously stated that export control restrictions are currently being finalized. Before the new measures come into force, they must be detailed and implemented in Dutch law, which takes time.
ASML has previously indicated potential infringement of intellectual property rights in China. The company’s 2021 report said it informed Chinese authorities of concerns that a firm was actively selling products in China that could potentially infringe its rights. The company was ready to go to court, but it did not come to that.
The China Semiconductor Industry Association said that “if this move [ограничения] becomes a reality, it will cause serious damage to China’s semiconductor industry and the global economy.” Asked about the ASML incident, Chinese Foreign Ministry official Wang Wenbin said he had no knowledge of the incident.
