The next Civilization is being developed by Firaxis Games, parent company Take-Two Interactive confirmed this information. The news comes six years after the launch of Civilization 6, which was a critical and commercial success on five platforms. There is no word yet on the release date or at least approximate terms.
Take-Two and 2K Games announced the development in a press release, also announcing the appointment of Heather Hazen as studio head of Firaxis and the firing of longtime developer Jake Solomon. Previously, Hazen was the COO of Firaxis Games. Ed Beach will remain the creative director of the next Civilization. Beach directed Civilization 6 and was the designer of 2010’s Civilization 5.
“I am very excited to continue the studio’s storied legacy, starting with the announcement that Firaxis is developing the next iteration of the legendary Civilization franchise,” Hazen said in a statement. — I am fortunate to work with some of the best developers in our industry, and we have plans to take the Civilization franchise to exciting new heights for our millions of players around the world. Additionally, we will continue to support Marvel’s Midnight Suns with post-launch content and explore new creative projects for our teams.”
The sixth game in the Civilization franchise, created by Sid Meier at Microprose over 30 years ago, was released in the fall of 2016. Two expansions were released for the game – Rise and Fall and Gathering Storm, as well as other downloadable content. According to Take-Two, more than 65 million copies of Civilization 6 have been sold to date.
