Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced the creation of a hub for the repair and modernization of German Leopard 2 tanks for the further supply of combat vehicles to Ukraine.
The official discussed the first details of the construction of the corresponding repair center with the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Olaf Scholz, the RAR newspaper writes. He also announced that today he will meet with the management of the German arms production concern Rheinmetall.
“Today I will meet with the management of Rheinmetall to continue these negotiations. We want to modernize not only the Leopard tanks that we have in stock, but also those that will return from Ukraine. We want to be able to repair and modernize the tanks,” he said. . Moravetskyi.
As the Prime Minister of Poland noted, earlier Warsaw had already activated its production facilities for the production of additional ammunition for Ukraine. Now it’s time to help Ukraine in the transfer of repaired tanks, he noted.
Poland’s initiative to repair Leopard 2 tanks
It should be noted that earlier the Polish government announced its intention to repair Leopard 2 combat vehicles for transfer to Ukraine. Officially, the Leopard 2A4 is being repaired by the Polish Bumar-Labenda Mechanical Plant.
The day before, the head of the Polish Ministry of Defense, Mariusz Blaszczak, announced problems with the repair of Leopard 2 due to a shortage of appropriate spare parts. He called on Berlin to cooperate and said that the Polish side is already negotiating the supply of parts with the Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz.
The Ministry of Defense of Poland also said that Warsaw has already started repairing T-72 tanks. Currently, the country has funds for the repair of 34 more combat vehicles.
According to the country’s president Andrzej Duda, Poland intends to transfer 14 Leopard 2 tanks and modernized T-72 to Ukraine within a month or two.
