The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is trying to improve the position of official Beijing regarding Russian aggression.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andrii Melnyk said that Ukraine is trying to improve diplomatic relations with China. However, communication at the leadership level between states remains “very difficult.”
“We are still trying to improve the position of official Beijing regarding Russian aggression… Unfortunately, communication was and remains very difficult at the highest level – at the level of leadership. Both the government, the president, and our entire diplomatic service tried both before the war and from the beginning of the war, and during the war to find the key to this very important state for us, so that its position was more favorable than today. That it was not only this neutrality (which, in principle, we also value)”. – Melnyk explained in an interview with “Ukrainian Pravda”.
According to the Deputy Head of the Foreign Ministry, Ukraine does not lose hope “to reach the hearts and minds of the Chinese leadership in order to make any alliance with Putin’s Russia impossible.”
The war in Ukraine: China’s position
Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, China has not sided with either side. Officially, Beijing advocated negotiations and a peaceful end to the war. However, information about China’s support for Russia has recently appeared in the media.
In addition, China’s top diplomat Wang Yi said that China intends to publish a document on February 24 that proposes a political solution to end the war in Ukraine.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that he heard from the Minister of Foreign Affairs Dmytro Kuliba a proposal for a peaceful settlement of the war with Russia from China, but he did not receive any official documents on this matter.
Later, the Permanent Representative of China to the UN Zhang Jun noted that on the anniversary of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation into Ukraine, the Chinese authorities will publish a “document with the position” of China regarding this war, and not a “peace plan” for its settlement.
