The Swedes decided to help Ukraine protect the sky from Russian attacks
Sweden will transfer IRIS-T and Hawk air defense systems to Ukraine as part of a new military aid package, which will also include Leopard tanks. This was stated by the Minister of Defense of Sweden Paul Jonson, whose words are quoted by SVT publication.
“Ukraine needs air defense systems, it is absolutely important for Ukraine that Russia does not gain dominance in the air. This is an opportunity that we must ensure in the long term,” Jonson said.
The minister noted that the decision to announce a new package of military aid precisely on the anniversary of the Russian invasion was not accidental.
“This is, of course, a sign from our side in relation to Russia, but primarily in relation to Ukraine, that we support it by presenting a new package of weapons today,” he said.
Military aid to Ukraine from Sweden
Sweden has been providing military, technical and financial support to Ukraine since the very beginning of the Russian invasion. In the first months of the war, aid was limited mainly to small arms, later supplies of anti-ship missiles and artillery ammunition began.
In the summer, Sweden also joined the international training program for Ukrainian soldiers. Swedish military instructors began training Ukrainians at British training grounds.
Already this year, Sweden has gone much further. In January, the supply of Swedish self-propelled howitzers was announced, and in February – Swedish tanks.
