Metacritic improves moderation after ‘offensive and disrespectful’ reviews of Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores

Burning Shores, the recently released Horizon Forbidden West game, has received many negative reviews from users on Metacritic. Many users gave a rating of 1 or 0, and also left critical feedback only because they did not like the possible manifestation of non-traditional sexual orientation of the main character.

While professional reviewers have rated the game fairly well, giving it an average score of 82, the user rating currently stands at 3.9, and at some point it was as low as 2.7. This result is caused by one plot point. Towards the end of the game, a dialogue between Eloi and her companion Seiki offers three possible answers, and one of them leads to a whole two women. The other two answer options do not cause a surge of same-sex romantic displays on the monitor screen. However, this very moment was the reason for the underrating of the user Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores.

Metacritic responded to such criticism of the game, stating that they are aware of “offensive and disrespectful reviews of Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores”. Currently, work is underway to develop processes and tools to introduce stricter moderation. The corresponding changes are planned to be implemented in the coming months.

Exactly how these moderation tools will look and work is yet to be determined. Meanwhile, several reviews of Burning Shores have already been removed from the site for violating the terms of use.

In addition, the developer of Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West, the company Guerrilla hinted that Ela’s story is not over – the world of Horizon will be expanded with the next adventure of the heroine.
