The new president of Finland will be the former prime minister of this country, Alexander Stubb. According to Yle, according to preliminary data, he received 51.6% of the votes; the final numbers will be announced on Wednesday.

Alexander Stubb built his election campaign on promises to make the most of his country’s new NATO membership and support Ukraine in the war against Russia.

“In political terms, there will be no relationship with either the Russian president or the Russian political leadership until they stop the war in Ukraine,” Stubb said in an interview with Reuters, talking about his policies as president.

The current president of the country, Sauli Niiniste, has already congratulated him on his victory in the elections. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky also expressed his congratulations to the newly elected President of Finland.

“I sincerely congratulate Alexander Stubb on his election as President of Finland. I appreciate his strong support for Ukraine. Ukraine and Finland, in solidarity with other partners, strengthen the security of all of Europe and every people of our continent,” he wrote on Twitter.

Who is Alexander Stubb

Stubb is one of the heavyweights of Finnish politics, but in recent years he has largely avoided active political activity. Stubb’s portfolio includes a fairly wide range of influential positions.

He was a member of the European Parliament from 2004-2008, after which he alternately served as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Trade, and Minister of Finance of Finland as a whole from 2008 to 2016. And from 2014 to 2015, he also headed the government of Finland.

Since 2016, Stubb has retreated from active participation in domestic Finnish politics and worked in the financial sector, in particular becoming vice president of the European Investment Bank.

In August 2023, Stubb announced his decision to run in the 2024 Finnish presidential election. If the final vote count confirms his victory (which there is little doubt), he will assume presidential powers on March 1.
