The European Union approved the 13th package of restrictive measures against the Russian Federation.

This is stated in a message on the website of the EU Council. The EU Council today approved the thirteenth package of restrictive measures against the regime of Vladimir Putin, taking into account the second anniversary of the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. In particular, sanctions are imposed against those individuals who are responsible for the continuation of Putin’s illegal, unprovoked and unjustified war of aggression, and against those individuals who substantially support the war.

In this regard, it was decided to apply restrictive measures against an additional 106 individuals and 88 legal entities for actions that undermine or threaten the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Thus, in total, European sanctions of this type are now applied against more than 2 thousand individuals and legal entities.

First of all, the new sanctions will specifically target the military and defense sectors and associated individuals, including those involved in the supply of weapons from North Korea to Russia, as well as representatives of the judiciary, local politicians and people responsible for illegal deportations and military re-education of Ukrainian children.

The EU Council has added 27 new companies to the sanctions list that directly support Russia’s military-industrial complex in its war of aggression against Ukraine. These companies will be subject to stricter export restrictions on dual-use goods and technologies, as well as on goods and technologies that can contribute to technological improvements in the Russian defense and security sector. Some of these companies are located in third countries (India, Sri Lanka, China, Serbia, Kazakhstan, Thailand and Turkey) and have been recruited to circumvent trade restrictions. Other companies are Russian and are involved in the development, production and supply of electronic components for the military-industrial complex of the Russian Federation.

In addition, the list of prohibited items is expanding that could contribute to the technological improvement of the Russian defense and security sectors by adding components for the development and production of unmanned aerial vehicles.

The European Union is introducing further restrictions on the export of goods that help expand Russia’s production capacity, such as electrical transformers.

Sanctions against the Russian Federation

On February 20, the European Union extended for a year – until February 24, 2025 – restrictive measures against the Russian Federation introduced in connection with the illegal annexation of Ukrainian territories in the Kherson, Zaporozhye, Donetsk and Lugansk regions.

As reported, on February 22, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said that sanctions are a mechanism for reducing the timing and intensity of Putin’s aggression. He emphasized that we need to work together to ensure that Russia does not manage to circumvent world sanctions.

As you know, the UK announced the introduction of more than 50 new sanctions to mark the second anniversary of Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine.
