Introduction

Hello everyone. A very busy week, an abundance of news and events. As a result, we jumped on the tops, but still many interesting events were left behind. For example, Lenovo Tech World, a broken timing belt in my car, reports from Google, Microsoft and Facebook, first quarter results from research companies. And also, remember, we had an advertising article from SkillFactory about changing the profession to a full-stack web developer, where I wrote eagerly how it’s all easy, simple and, they say, everyone can master. So, SkillFactory gave access to the course and offered to try to go through and share impressions of the learning process. Began to pass. I will try to give some first impressions by the end of the week.

About the battery life of the new iPhone 12 Pro

First I read the news on Phonearena, and then I saw that Spillikins also had a note about the deplorable battery life in the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro during gaming sessions.

First, however, let’s start with the results in everyday tasks.

As you can see, in the browser test and when watching videos, the new iPhone 12 shows a similar time to the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. Here it is necessary to make an amendment that PhoneArena sets the brightness to 200 nits and conducts testing. At this brightness, you probably only look at your smartphone before going to bed. In daily use, this is 4-6 hours of screen operation, which I consider an unacceptable result for modern smartphones. Although Eldar argues with me in absentia, telling in the text about the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, that he just charged everywhere with charges and lives.

However, once you get to the gaming test, the battery life drops dramatically. I doubt that the 6-core processor is to blame, if only for the reason that the iPhone 11 models also had a 6-core processor, but look how the iPhone 11 gave 7.5 hours on the graph.

This is, of course, a puncture by Apple, which is likely to be either corrected by the release of a firmware update, or the game developers will change something. Obviously, the chipset has some kind of bug causing the system to discharge faster than it should. Although this is usually more common in laptops, both on Windows and on macOS, when after the update there is some process that boots the entire system.

I emphasize once again that it is not in vain that Apple made 8 cores for its artificial intelligence in the new processors, instead of 16. Apparently Apple is following a similar path with Nvidia, which has made its RTX dash (ray tracing) thanks to artificial intelligence.

Apple’s Neural Engine is designed to enable neural networks and machine learning to do the same processes faster and more energy efficiently. However, there is a subtle point here. Initially, developers of third-party applications did not have access to the Neural Engine. Starting with the A12, such an opportunity has appeared. The A14 has a significant increase in the power of the Neural Engine, so it is obvious that the developers and the iPhone itself do not know how to handle this power efficiently with such performance.

In any case, to release a smartphone with a similar bug on sale is not just a jamb, but, in general, how? Such an obvious topic. Doesn’t anyone play games at Apple?

About Exynos chipsets

As they say, from our celebration of life, let only someone try to leave deprived. Exynos has long been the subject of ridicule and jokes. And there is some truth in this, for example, I hardly play Call of Duty Mobile on my Galaxy Note 9. A very simple reason. After 15-20 minutes, the smartphone heats up, hands start to sweat, and fingers stop sliding across the screen. And I play great on Xiaomi.

And the chipset situation peaked this year, when Samsung’s flagships in the home South Korean market came out on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon. This is akin to the fact that the President of the United States would drive through Washington not in a Cadillac, but in a BMW. Even in our country they are trying to transplant the president onto their own development, Aurus Senate. As they say, a matter of prestige. Apparently, Samsung understood this too. On November 12, Samsung will host an event specifically dedicated to chipsets, specifically the Exynos 1080 chipset, which is likely to be charged with bringing back the glory of the Exynos home.

You can skip the QR code, there is an invitation to register for an offline meeting in Shanghai

Although there are, of course, two points that are alarming.

Firstly, it is obvious that Samsung is in such a hurry to make a presentation due to the fact that Apple and Huawei have not only presented, but are also selling smartphones on the new 5nm chipsets. We understand the cycle of the market movement and that Samsung and Qualcomm, who have not yet shown their 5 nm solutions, are not lagging behind, but simply delayed. Qualcomm usually releases new items at the summit in December, and Samsung generally releases new products at the announcement of new Galaxy. However, apparently, in the eyes of ordinary consumers, 5 nm is a certain milestone (besides, backlit by Apple) and one cannot lag behind. If this is the main driver, then it’s sad. Then a dull event and mediocre decisions await us.

As if they are embarrassed to say that there is Exynos in Russia

The second point is that it seems that this is the first event from Samsung only about chipsets, and at the same time Exynos will be presented so brightly. So that you understand, Samsung does not name the brands of chipsets even on the official website in the characteristics of the smartphone. So maybe they really decided to call “Voldemort” by name. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for good luck, because if not Samsung, then who?

Who if not Samsung?

Continuing the question from the previous part. Let’s be honest, Samsung is not a sugar pretzel, but does it have competitors in the flagship market? Before the trade wars, I started to believe in Huawei. Good smartphones, advanced infrastructure and productive solutions in a smartphone + laptop bundle.

So far, however, the sanctions have put a bold cross on my aspirations. After all, I’m tied to the Google infrastructure: the cloud, the synchronization of games and documents between devices, the capabilities of Google Pay. Is it possible to climb onto a device without Google? Can. The only question is, why are these torments needed? Gone are the years when I, out of curiosity, installed Linux for myself, and then on the second computer I searched the entire Internet in search of how to make the printer and modem work.

Another point is that Huawei is still on the bird’s rights in the global market. And if you look closely, the company’s smartphones have been working on almost the same hardware for a couple of years. Will Huawei be able to catch up to the market on its own? Nothing is impossible, but it won’t be soon. So, there are rumors that the company wants to open its own chipset factory in Shanghai, operating on equipment not from the USA. For understanding, the first chips in such a plant will be 28 nm, and in 2022 the plan is to switch to 20 nm production. By the way, these will not be outdated solutions. Such chipsets may well be used in IoT gadgets, TVs or telecom equipment. But, I suppose, you understand that at such a pace, not earlier than 2030, Huawei will be able to fully deploy, and then only on condition that the company is successful.

Can Xiaomi seriously be seen as a replacement for Samsung? On the one hand, Xiaomi really pulled up on hardware and user experience. On the other hand, Samsung is shaking me from advertising inclinations, but here it is. It is a shame that all manufacturers prefer this hypocritical game of suppressing advertising. Someone would take it and say directly: “Here is our flagship for $ 1, it has advertising, if you want without advertising, then give us another $ 500-100.” But, unfortunately, this cannot be done. More precisely, you can do it once, but then you will need to create a new brand.

Realme and other offspring of BBK Electronics (OnePlus, Oppo, Vivo, iQOO). They sell a lot and their smartphones are getting prettier from year to year, but they are good. They have learned how to make screens, cameras, and have mastered the engineering that smartphones do not overheat and do not fall apart. However, the BBK has not yet been created, but copied well (almost well, protection from water has not yet been really mastered). But if you understand that most of the smartphone market is inexpensive and mid-priced models, then it is obvious that BBK is doing well and it will push Samsung, Xiaomi and Huawei.

The products of Nokia, Google, Lenovo-Motorola can also be referred to the number of good people. You can take the G9 Plus and not know the grief. But so far Motorola Edge + does not play as a flagship.

And there is no one else. Sony or ASUS? Or what do you think? This is exclusively about the flagship market.

LG as a competitor?

I’ve been following LG for a long time. Back in 2017, I wrote about the company, and at the beginning of this year we were discussing with you what to expect from the replacement of the company’s CEO.

If you forgot, then the new CEO promised that in 2021 the mobile division of LG will come out on top. In the past decade, apparently, only 3 years can be recorded as profitable (“as it were”, because not only and not so much smartphones are to blame for profitability).

And then on October 30, LG released its third quarter report, and news slipped through that the mobile division was beginning to recover from its troubles. It’s time to take a look! Keep in mind that the goal for the entire 3 was voiced as “capture the 2020G market” (not to take a share, but to grab it!). At first glance, the picture is familiar. All divisions, except smartphones, made a profit.

Don’t look at Vehicle component, LG is actively investing in R&D. You see, revenue growth is 80% quarter-on-quarter. Until there is still profit

# Echo95: if not Samsung, then who? Apple's tricky report

Frankly, I don’t see any recovery. Everything is similar to what it was a year ago. The loss is slightly less. There are many interpretations here. First, the company cut the cost while relocating production to Vietnam. Secondly, it reduced marketing costs. Thirdly, there was a lockdown, and you can also save a little on offline sales.

However, LG’s slide is still encouraging. The company has a fairly balanced offer in the middle price segment. There is a slightly ridiculous, but still innovative smartphone to attract attention, there is a Velvet series with a good design, correct characteristics and the option to buy a second case with a second screen. Relatively good Q-series, responsible for more affordable models. The only thing missing is a real flagship on top-end hardware. But, perhaps, it is not needed yet. The T-Wing is doing a pretty good job.

Radeon 6000 – big announcement from AMD

In September, I made a text about Nvidia’s presentation, ending it with tweets from AMD Radeon representatives, who called the event good and offered to wait for what AMD would show.

# Echo95: if not Samsung, then who? Apple's tricky report

And now the moment has come! However, I did not understand what exactly we were asked to wait. The company only showed basic performance tests, but about ray tracing and its analogue DLSS (a technology that allows artificial intelligence to scale the picture to a higher resolution) said that the information would come later.

# Echo95: if not Samsung, then who? Apple's tricky report

AMD’s advantage is only in price, but not everything is obvious here either. So, the Nvidia RTX 3070 (similar in power to the RTX 2080 Ti) at a price of $ 499 in the US is more profitable than the options from AMD, which start at $ 579 for the RX 6800. If there are enlightened ones, please explain in the comments why we are waited for the new Radeon?

Instead of a conclusion, a thought about Apple’s report

I still believe in Tim Cook’s financial genius, whose words do not diverge from deeds. The decline in iPhone revenue came as no surprise. Especially if you listened to the previous call at the end of the quarter, when Mr. Cook promised that everything would be so. You can speculate here for a long time, but let’s frankly, does anyone doubt that Tim Cook would be able to draw the reporting on the iPhone so that it would be on a par with last year’s reference quarter?

# Echo95: if not Samsung, then who? Apple's tricky report

Rather, I see it as a deliberate intention to show that Apple can make excellent money without record iPhone sales. Especially when all other categories grew at a phenomenal rate throughout the fiscal year. At the same time, Cook did not forecast future sales, but promised double-digit growth.
