Positioning

It is worth noting here the global positioning and how the Vivo V20 is presented in its price niche. If we are considering option number one, then the V20 is the first smartphone on the operating system Google Android 11 with a 44 MP front camera, and even with autofocus. I like such applications, at least there is something to catch on while writing the material.

Option number two: a typical device in the middle price category, made in a nice design and with a body thickness of 7.3 mm.

Vivo itself distinguishes the following things:

  1. A powerful front camera, of course
  2. Google Android 11
  3. 64 MP main camera
  4. Fast charging
  5. Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G processor

Sales of the device are scheduled for October 23 this year. The price will be approximately 27 rubles (at the time of writing the review, the cost was not announced).

Design, dimensions, controls

It seems to me that Vivo has found its own design, something that is worth paying attention to when creating new models. I mean a thin body, satin frosted glass on the rear panel and a rectangular design of the module with cameras, where all the edges are not sloping and there is a “step” to accommodate an additional lens or flash.

You can easily recognize Vivo devices by the very features that I described above. This is how the X50, X50 Pro and V20 are made.

Many people scold Apple for the fact that it hardly changes the appearance of its devices for years. Perhaps the point lies in the fact that this is the most recognizable style. Over the years, we have become so accustomed to the round button-scanner in the iPhone that every second respondent would no doubt recognize the iPhone in this device.

Then Apple introduced the bangs. Show now to a person who does not understand technology, a similar smartphone with a “cutout”, and he will most likely call it “iPhone”, even if it is a different brand. This is called design continuity.

A little away from the Vivo V20 theme. Just wanted to say that Vivo found their design and that’s good.

The first impressions of the device are thin, pleasant to the touch due to the glass surface with matte coating. It is easy to use. From the point of view of ergonomics, there are no problems.

The front of the device is also made of glass. Oleophobic coating is present, the quality is good, but not the best. The prints are noticeable and can be erased easily. The frame of the device is made of durable plastic (polymer), although it is very similar to metal.

A smartphone in the color “Mysterious Night” came to my review. There is also the “Colorful Sunset” option. Of course, the most versatile is black. But if I bought myself, I would take a chameleon (“Colorful Sunset”).

At certain viewing angles in the light, the back cover can be either dark gray or with shades of pale blue. There is a gradient, the colors smoothly blend into each other.

I think the Vivo V20 is the prettiest smartphone in the mid-range. It looks strict and neat, partly expensive. This is my personal opinion, and it may not be the same as yours.

There is a cutout for the camera on the top of the front panel. He is typical and unremarkable. This I mean that there is still a 44 MP module, and even with autofocus. It is surprising that such a powerful camera could be sunk into the body, and in devices with a body thickness of 8-9 mm, you have to sculpt a ledge on the back. A simple example: the deadliest 13 MP module in the Honor Pad V6, and the hump looks like there is a 10x super zoom. I understand that there is a sensor size and it may not be related to megapixels. However, the 44MP flush-mount autofocus in the 7mm body is cool.

The earpiece speaker is traditionally on the edge. It is very loud and sounds clear.

Bottom – 3.5mm microphone, USB-C, speakerphone.

On right – raised power button, volume control.

From above – microphone for noise reduction.

Слева – a non-combined slot for two nano SIM cards and a slot for a microSD card. Such a tandem is rare. True, the device already has 128 GB of internal memory. But if you need to increase the storage, then you can. Just don’t buy cheap slow cards, as the internal memory runs at 750/250 MB / s.

On the back you will find a module with three cameras and a flash.

The fingerprint scanner is hidden under the display at the very bottom. Works confidently, but not very fast. Most often I used face unlock.

Display

Display 6.44 inches, 1080×2400 pixels, AMOLED, automatic brightness control, AlwaysOn Display
HDR10 support

The maximum brightness of the screen backlight by the white point is 640 cd / m2. not bad, but I would like to be higher. The display is slightly dim in the sun.

As you noticed, there is HDR technology here. On YouTube, this feature is included.

One of the important parameters in 2020 is the elimination of PWM. This model has a flicker reduction mode.

Without using elimination:

  • 100% brightness – 6.5% ripple rate
  • 50% brightness – 73% CP
  • 10% brightness – 80% CP

Vivo V20 review - taking selfies to the next levelVivo V20 review - taking selfies to the next level

Using elimination technology:

  • 100% brightness – 6.5% ripple rate
  • 50% brightness – 12% CP
  • 10% brightness – 23% CP

Yes, this function works, but the values are still slightly above the 10% acceptable level. In general, this is better than ruining the eyes at 80% ripple rate.

By the way, about the color distortion when you enable PWM elimination. Either this is a myth, or this effect manifests itself in some exceptional situations. On the Vivo V20’s screen, this was not observed.

Otherwise, you have a typical AMOLED screen with all the consequences: Always On, saturated colors, deep blacks, and so on. By the way, AOD is poorly implemented, many notifications are not displayed. On Huawei / Honor / Samsung devices it is done much better.

Autonomy

Battery 4000 mAh
Fast charging FlashCharge 2.0 at 33 W (11V / 3A)

Despite the typical battery characteristics, the Vivo V20 smartphone lasts a long time. In my case, on automatic brightness and when fully “equipped” with programs, the device produced 6.5 hours of display glow. This is a very good result. As a rule, such gadgets in my conditions “lived” with 4.5 – 5.5 hours of screen glow.

With games, too, it comes out well – about 5 hours (only games, without using the phone).

Charges in about 1 hour 10 minutes from a standard 33 W AC adapter. If suddenly you connect other power supplies, the charge will last indefinitely. So it was with the Vivo X50 Pro.

Memory, chipset, performance

Smoothly, but confidently, we came to the fact that almost all modern devices are equipped with 6 GB of RAM and at least 128 GB of internal memory. Yes, there are some brands that still start counting from 64 GB with a product cost of 40 rubles and no memory card. Of course, all of these cloud storage can save the day, but they can never fully replace a physical storage object.

The new Vivo has 8 GB of RAM – a little more than the standard. However, hardly anyone can really tell the difference between 6, 8 or 12 GB of RAM. Tabbed Browser? I have about 20 open in Safari on Apple iPhone SE, and nothing. Oh, do you need over 100? ?

The RAM speed of the Vivo V20 model is 22 MB / s – just below the flagship. The speed of the built-in memory is 000/460 MB / s, which is also slightly lower than the flagship one, but still good.

The data that I received above shows that the cost of the phone at 27 rubles is fully justified.

Platform Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G chipset, 8nm, 8 cores (2xCortex-A76 @ 2.3GHz, 6xCortex-A55 @ up to 1.8GHz)
Qualcomm Adreno 618

The processor scores about 270 points in Antutu. You can treat the test as you like, but at least it shows the average “temperature in the hospital.” And once again confirms that the model belongs to the middle price range.

There is throttling, but it is small: the performance drops by only 20%. There were 190 GIPS, now 150 GIPS.

Vivo V20 review - taking selfies to the next level

However, in general, the smartphone cannot be called smooth. I get the impression, collected from a large number of smartphones of different brands (Asus, Vivo, Oppo, and so on) in different price groups, that pure Google Android only works adequately on the Google Pixel. On other devices, the system has microlags in the animation, there is no smoothness. This can be understood only by picking up gadgets from Apple, Huawei and Honor (I can’t say anything about Samsung, since I haven’t tested them for 5 years already). There, the animation is as smooth as possible, even without 90-120 Hz. I would like to emphasize that this is not a system lag, but an animation lag. This feeling is about the level of the lack of kinetic scrolling. Everything seems to be fine, but something is wrong. Moreover, this animation sometimes does not correspond to the speed of interaction with the system: you slowly swiped your finger across the screen, and the list scrolled quickly.

As a result, you have a powerful modern phone in your hands, but such simple things as animation work crookedly. This is probably also why some users switch to the iPhone, since the animation there has always been as smooth as possible. You enjoy interacting with the OS. I have had similar feelings from Pixel devices of all generations. There is also a tactile feedback.

I found some bugs in the Vivo V20 smartphone, but for now I will blame them on the “freshness” of the firmware. If nothing changes, then I will add all the oddities of the smartphone to this text. In particular, on both V20 and V20SE auto brightness sometimes floats: the phone screen is on, and the brightness either increases or decreases (conventionally from 50% to 70% and back).

Software

This model runs under Google Android version 11. It is already interesting, because even without updates the phone will not lose its relevance for a couple of years.

In this review, I will not go into details about Android 11 and the proprietary shell Funtouch OS 11. But in short:

  • New AI video editor. I tried turning on the “smart editor” on my home video. It turned out stupid: the editor cut the video to 15 seconds, applying some funny AR effects to it. Moreover, as I found out later, there are only two such types of effects. What does AI have to do with it, it’s not entirely clear.
  • Added “Recommendations” to albums with photos and videos. The same is true for almost all devices from other brands. Memories are collected over a period of time. Moreover, AI does not work here at all: footage of my child and a sewer pipe that I was repairing last week got into the memories.
  • IManager appeared on the system. In principle, such a program, again, is available in almost all smartphones of other brands.
  • S-capture app. Translated as “super screenshot”. A menu opens with the ability to record a screencast, create a long screenshot, a rectangular screenshot (any area of the screen), “funny screenshot” (a silly name for a quite serious tool for complex creation of a “screen”).
  • Ultra Game Mode. Add-on during the game. Knows how to block different notifications.

You can find out a little more details on the official website.

Communication capabilities

Wireless interfaces Wi-Fi a / b / g / n / ac 2 × 2 MIMO, DualBand, Bluetooth 5.1 (SBC, AAC, LDAC, aptX / aptxHD), NFC
Сеть Dual SIM, nanoSIM, one radio

Sensors and connectors Fingerprint scanner under the screen, USB Type-C
Accelerometer
Lighting
Approximations

Gyroscope

I think that in subsequent reviews I will not include this point in the material, since it makes no sense to retell what is indicated in the table. If there are deviations from the norm, I will describe them. In this case, there are no questions: everything is familiar and works well.

Камеры

Monochrome: 2 MP, f / 2.4
Front-camera 44 MP, f / 2.0, 23mm, autofocus

Vivo V20 review - taking selfies to the next level

As usual, I’ll start with the most boring one – monochrome camera. It is located on the back on the right. It cannot be selected from the “Camera” menu. You can enable it only in effects – “black and white layer”. True, the photo will still be taken on the main module. What role it plays is hard to say. Most likely to expand the dynamic range.

“Shirik”, aka “makrik”, aka “bokeh”. The camera on the left handles three functions, you guessed it. In macro mode, it is “sprinkled” several times, so only 8 MP macro remains from 2 MP “width”. The quality is mediocre.

The wide-angle lens itself is also so-so. The edges in the photo are very soapy. But the module and software are trying to extend the frame to the maximum. Therefore, the photo is not too sharp in the corners, but the colors and DD are just excellent.

I liked the main camera. I was especially pleased with the dynamic range. Apparently, a joint work with a monochrome module. She photographs very well. Night photos seemed extremely interesting. And this is without an optical stabilizer, without a tripod – handheld. An excellent result, comparable to the top Huawei devices.

Well, the main “pretzel” of the device is a selfie camera. Its quality really makes you wonder. The frames are the most detailed, clear, natural colors. Autofocus works quickly and accurately. I remember a few years ago there was an Asus Selfie. So he also gave out the coolest selfies. I even had the impression that he shot better with the front camera than with the main one. By the way, there were no “shirikov” back then, but in ASUS the front module was wide-angle. I often made shots on him. It turned out cool. Here with Vivo is about the same story.

The Vivo V20 can shoot 4K video at 30 fps. 1080p clips are saved at 50 fps, 720p at 60 fps. The super-wide module only understands 1080p at 30 fps. The front camera writes at 4K and 30 fps.

Frankly, this kind of leapfrog annoys me a little: there is no understanding of what resolution to record video and at what frame rate, and most importantly – which module will support all this.

The interface is simple: on the top – quick selection of flash effects and settings, on the bottom – photo / video / portrait / night and so on. Cameras are switched with the round button on the right. You don’t notice her right away.

Musical possibilities

It uses one speaker to output music. The speaker is loud, the sound is flat, but without overload.

Vivo V20 review - taking selfies to the next level

Keepers of the 3.5mm headphones can rejoice: the Vivo V20 has a standard jack. Personally, this did not touch me in any way, since I have been using TWS for a long time. By the way, this model can work with the aptX codec. Just the other day I wrote a review about the Mixcder E9 Pro headphones with aptX support. Just tested with Vivo V20.

Impressions

Smartphone Vivo V20 turned out to be interesting in no small measure thanks to the design. Unlike most glossy plastic trinkets, the novelty features a noble frosted glass. Therefore, the smartphone looks stylish, strict and expensive.

Other nice features:

  • Fast memory
  • Bouncy processor
  • Excellent quality of the main camera module and the coolest selfie camera
  • Long battery life
  • The presence of a separate slot for a microSD card
  • Google Android 11
  • Good equipment

Vivo V20 review - taking selfies to the next level

Of the disadvantages:

Bottom line: an extremely confident smartphone in the mid-range, which is worth considering in terms of looks, ergonomics and cameras.

Vivo V20 review - taking selfies to the next level

The phone has a lot of competitors, I don’t want to list them all. I think you already know them: Poco X3, Samsung Galaxy M51 / A71, Xiaomi Mi Note 10 Lite, various Huawei and Honor.
