European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that the adoption of an agreement on an embargo on Russian oil by the EU is a matter of a few weeks. She also said that Russia should play a role in the reconstruction of Ukraine.
The decision on the embargo must be adapted in such a way that Russian President Vladimir Putin cannot sell oil at a higher price on the world market.
Von der Leyen said this at the World Economic Forum, writes CNN.
“We are working hard on this now, it is a matter of weeks, but we really need to find a solution for investment needs . And because this is important, we must adapt it in such a way that we do not have a situation that Putin can take oil, so that he does not sold it to us and (later – ed.) sold it at a higher price on the world market,” said the head of the European Commission.
Andriy Yermak, head of the President’s Office, commented on her statement.
” It is important that the EU shows strength and unity and does not waste time, and the Russian economy does not receive additional funding for the war in Ukraine in Europe,” the head of the OP wrote on the Web.
The head of the European Commission also said that Russia should play a role in the restoration of Ukraine.
“The needs of reconstruction, the financial needs are huge, and we all have to pay, also international financial institutions. And I think it would be fair for Russia to also pay its share. So now we are considering legal options to add the frozen assets to this reconstruction. It’s not trivial, it’s not easy from a legal point of view, but we’re working on it,” von der Leyen said.
Recall that some EU members, in particular Hungary , continue to oppose the proposal of the European Commission to gradually stop buying Russian oil until the beginning of 2023. The Russian oil embargo was supposed to be part of the sixth round of EU sanctions against Russia since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
