One of our readers shared his experience with the Galaxy Note 2014 Edition tablet, a device that was introduced just over five years ago and is still in use today. It would seem, what’s wrong with that? But the experience of Vadim Bugaev is interesting in that for him an electronic device has become a replacement for paper notebooks, and in this aspect, history plays with new colors. But, however, let’s give the floor to Vadim.
Where it all started
It all started with the fact that I went for a walk along the Nevsky, thinking about buying Moleskin notebooks. I bought a Samsung Galaxy Note 2014 edition. It was in March 2014
No, though. It all started much earlier. After all, I regularly kept paper notebooks since the early 00s. At first, I did not attach importance to a notebook as a tool – for me it was more important to be able to take notes at the end of the day, later I became interested in freewriting and drawing mind-maps. Then I began to capture ideas as I read books, create visual notes and much more …
However, over time, the number of notebooks grew, and this introduced some chaos in the structure. Plus, the availability of these notebooks and the notes they contain has been steadily declining. With the introduction of Evernote, GTD, and a phone with a good camera in my life, the structure became clearer, but the number of paper notebooks continued to grow. The thing is, I like the freedom of handwriting. And I will never give up on it in favor of typing on the keyboard.
In general, at the moment when I wandered along the Nevsky, thoughts were spinning in my head that some kind of solution was needed. And the good old Galaxy Tab could no longer cope with the solution of these problems. So the idea arose, albeit very spontaneously, to buy a tablet, which I called a “digital moleskin”. And he is still doing his job properly.
Use cases and workflow
Of course, the perception of any tablet, and even a smartphone, is strongly influenced by the fact that I started my introduction to digital moleskines with Palm handhelds. And now, almost 20 years later, with great pleasure and comfort, I use everything that I was so lacking then.
I must say that my digital moleskin has not only been integrated into my workflow, but has become its centerpiece. Initially, it was a highly advanced version of the Inbox. The local system of notebooks (which are very similar to my paper notebooks) allowed me to record everything that interested me during the day using a stylus (I note – a very advanced stylus), a voice recorder, and a camera. And in the evening, already in a rather comfortable mode, I structured all the information accumulated during the day – I immediately put something into operation, something went into the storage system, something remained fixed in digital notebooks and waited in the wings. Well, everything else was laid out in the diary in the form of projects and a list of actions.
And how convenient it has become to work with books. Because now a book and a pen for notes in the margins did not just make up a single whole, but gave a huge scope for imagination.
And when the MacBook Air suddenly appeared in my digital ecosystem, I had no difficulties. I just built the process so that each of the devices solved its own class of problems, and used quite classic scenarios for the exchange.
At the moment, somewhat outdated, but in general, quite a working scheme
Divide and focus
Here I must say that I am quite minimalistic in my approach to choosing an application for work. And I prefer to build work with applications in relation to the device on which I work.
For example, on a tablet, I don’t have any notifications. Absolutely. Moreover, I have absolutely no social media applications on it. Just reading and writing notes, plus everything that helps me in these processes and is their continuation.
Yes, in order to arrange it this way, I transferred everything to a smartphone (naturally, this is a Galaxy Note 9, although it did not immediately become such). However, everything is quite minimalistic on it too.
What’s next?
The reason for writing all this was the recent presentation of the Galaxy Tab S7 Plus. In my subjective opinion, the Samsung Galaxy Note 2014 Edition has finally received a worthy continuation (both visually and in terms of filling). Everything that had good potential for development at the beginning of 2014 received it at the beginning of 2020. The model is very worthy. The laptop will not replace me. However, it will allow you to do without it in a large number of working scenarios.
And now my head is again full of thoughts that the current ecosystem needs improvement. Apparently, it’s time to take a walk along the Nevsky again.
