Positioning

At the end of April 2020, the Chinese brand Honor began selling the Honor 30 line in its homeland. It includes three devices: Honor 30, Honor 30 Pro and Honor 30 Pro +. In Russia, the announcement of the devices was scheduled for May 28, that is, today.

In this article, we will focus on the Honor 30 Pro +. This is a flagship device with all the ensuing modern realities: a large 6.57-inch OLED screen, which supports a refresh rate of 90 Hz and HDR technology, the fastest Huawei processor with operation in fifth-generation networks, a 50 MP camera module from the top-end P40 / P40 Pro devices, use not only wireless charging, but also reversible, the presence of Wi-Fi 6 wireless technology and the presence of two stereo speakers.

In fact, this is a slightly simplified version of the Huawei P40 Pro. Actually, the usual story with this brand: first, a cool Huawei device comes out, followed by a slightly modified Honor product. This happens with smartphones as well as with the rest of the electronics.

Naturally, the novelty is devoid of Google services. It should be understood that now all Huawei devices will work exclusively with HMS. Therefore, in subsequent reviews, I will not once again write about the absence / presence of GMS in the Chinese brand. They do not exist and, most likely, they will never be.

And here it is important for us to know the cost of the 30 Pro +, since it was Honor that adhered to the low price policy. But this information was not known at the time of writing. For example, the Huawei P40 is sold on the official website for 50 rubles, and the P000 Pro for 40 rubles. So the Honor 70 Pro + should be somewhere in between. It can be assumed that about 000 – 30 rubles will be asked for it.

Expensive? Well, things aren’t cheap now. All flagship devices have skyrocketed in price, even the “killer” OnePlus asks for unrealistic money for him. We’ll have to get used to …

I am sure that when you buy Honor 30 Pro +, you will also receive a Magic Watch or Magic Earbuds as a gift.

Design, dimensions, controls

Hello again from 2019-2020 design! For the past year, the shape of the display is responsible, and for this year, the shape of the camera module. That’s it, the fantasy is over! Apple is tired of copying, Samsung is also in a crisis of ideas, and the rest of the manufacturers, who used “tracing paper”, are in deep Oppo.

Honor 30 Pro + flagship review

So, before you Huawei P40 Pro with a slightly simplified appearance. If in the P40 Pro the screen was made sloping from all sides, then in the Honor 30 Pro + they made a display similar to the one used in the Huawei P30 Pro.

Honor 30 Pro + flagship review

If you read me regularly, you know that I do not support waterfall screens. It is inconvenient to use them. If you want to make gesture control comfortable, then just round off the right and left sides of the display quite a bit.

Right now I have Honor 30 Pro +, Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro, OnePlus 8 Pro and Huawei P40 on my desk. Guess with one try which smartphone is the most user-friendly? Correct – P40 because of the screen of a “normal person”, not a “smoker”.

Dimensions Honor 30 Pro + standard for most modern smartphones – 160 × 73 × 8.38-8.63 mm. That is, it is elongated, not very wide, but a little fat. At least it doesn’t feel thin in the hand. Weighs 186 grams. Everything is good here, especially if you remember that the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro can only be lifted with a winch with its 240 grams along with a case.

Honor 30 Pro + flagship review

The frame of the Pro + is metal, chrome. On the front side, the glass has a high-quality oleophobic coating. On the back there is also glass. There are 3 color options: black, green and blue-gray. I got the last one for review.

Honor 30 Pro + flagship review

And then the designers of the Honor brand (he grinned) decided to show off and wrote the word HONOR along the entire length of the case. Yes, I can already see how you start to write in the commentary: “Phew, what a gypsy!” And I really like it. Looks like some kind of statement: “I USE HONOR”. You don’t spit on a bitten apple on the back of almost all Apple gadgets. Well, here’s nothing!

Honor 30 Pro + flagship review

The glass of the back is satin-finished, the prints remain, but are almost invisible.

With the assembly, everything is fine, for a month of use – no scratches, no chips, no scuffs. No creaks or backlash, the back panel does not bend to the battery.

Usability:

  1. Huawei P30
  2. Huawei P40
  3. Huawei P40 Pro and Mate 30 Pro
  4. Huawei P30 Pro and Honor 30 Pro +
  5. OnePlus 8 Pro
  6. Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro

There are two cameras on the front panel. The decision is wrong!

Honor 30 Pro + flagship review

One camera can be used to blur the background without any difficulty. And if you have already decided to insert something there – so the IR illumination for quick unlocking of the screen in low light levels. By the way, the proximity sensor was installed under the screen! If the screen is lit, then the sensor is not visible, but when the screen is off, then in bright light you can replace a certain area on the top right.

Honor 30 Pro + flagship review

The earpiece is physical, unlike the Huawei P30 Pro, P40 and P40 Pro. Located at the very edge on the upper edge. Again they made it so that the interlocutor had to be listened to by tilting the phone at 30-40 degrees.

Above is an IR transmitter and a noise canceling microphone. Bottom – tray with two SIM cards (second slot for NM memory card), main microphone, USB Type-C, speaker.

On the right is the power button (thin, small) and the volume rocker key.

Honor 30 Pro + flagship review

On the back there is a rather large module: three cameras, a flash, and a laser focusing system.

Fingerprint scanner – under the screen. Recognition is slightly above average, average speed. You can use the front camera, but will not work at night.

Total: familiar design, pretty glass with a huge HONOR inscription, average ergonomics, cool assembly.

Display

Display 6.57 inches, 1080×2340 pixels (19.5: 9), OLED, automatic brightness control, AlwaysOn Display, refresh rate 90 Hz

The 30 Pro + is the brand’s first OLED device. The maximum brightness in manual mode is 720 cd / m2. This value is enough for comfortable reading of information even in the light of the sun.

Honor 30 Pro + flagship review

There is no anti-flicker (PWM) option in this model. Below is the ripple factor data in relation to the brightness of the display backlight:

  • 100% brightness – 3.3% CP
  • 65% – 3.6% CP
  • 50% – 3% CP
  • 25% – 4.5% CP
  • 10% – 8% CP
  • 1% – 20% CP

That’s what I understand – just wonderful values for OLED: only at a brightness of about zero, the ripple coefficient showed 20%. Let me remind you that it is advisable to keep the KP no more than 10-20%.

In terms of matrix perception, the screen is not bad, but Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro is still better. There the picture looks like it was painted in gouache, and on the Honor 30 Pro + – in watercolor. However, the image on Xiaomi fades into red shades.

Total: bright, no PWM, at 90 Hz, but the colors are not as saturated as on more expensive devices.

Working hours

There is a 4000 mAh battery. During a month of operation, support for 90 Hz screen frequency was included.

In this case, the smartphone showed 3 hours of screen glow with two days of use or 4-5 hours of screen glow with one day of use. Quite frankly, average values.

Some reviewers will probably show you 5-6 hours of screen glow. But that would mean that they tested the smartphone for a week at best. And I will explain to you what is the reason for such high numbers. All Huawei / Honor smartphones for the first week, or even two, “rub in” to the user. They track the applications that are launched and remember the most frequently used ones. So, for the first week or two, all programs are “thrown out” of the background. Hence the long battery life. Trust my experience – I have been with Huawei / Honor on an ongoing basis for three years now.

40W AC adapter included. Charges your smartphone in about a little over an hour. The device supports wireless charging (27W) as well as reversible charging (7,5W).

Communication capabilities

For ease of perception, I summarized all the necessary data in a table:

Wireless Interfaces Wi-Fi a / b / g / n / ac / ax 2 × 2 MIMO, DualBand, Bluetooth 5.1 (SBC, AAC, LDAC), NFC
5G NR: n1 / n3 / n41 / n77 / n78 / n79
Сеть Dual SIM, nanoSIM (combo slot)
Navigation Supports GPS (dual-band L1 + L5) / AGPS / GLONASS / Beidou (tri-band B1I + B1C + B2a) / Galileo (dual-band E1 + E5a) / QZSS (dual-band L1 + L5) / NavIC
Sensors and connectors Fingerprint scanner under the screen, USB Type-C 3.0
Gesture sensor
Gyroscope
Compass
IR transmitter
Barometer

There are no complaints about the quality of cellular signal reception. NFC payment now works using the Wallet program. The filling of the Troika passes functions without question. Note: aptX / aptX HD audio codecs are missing.

Efficiently working tables with data again:

Front-camera 32 + 8 MP (f / 2.0), 26mm, bokeh effect, various additional effects

Honor 30 Pro + flagship review

In fact, the Honor 30 Pro + should use the same cameras as the Huawei P40, except for the telephoto lens: in the first device it is at 5X, and in the second at 3X. However, I decided to compare these cameras anyway.

If you do not pay attention to post-processing, then the detail from the main cameras is the same during the day. It’s just that the picture is a little nicer on the P40.

Honor 30 Pro + flagship review

The wide-angle cameras differ in Honor’s favor, but I have the impression that they are slightly sharper there.

Honor 30 Pro + flagship review

When using zoom lenses, the difference is small, but again, with a slight advantage towards Honor.

Honor 30 Pro + flagship review
Honor 30 Pro + flagship review

In low light, the detail is the same plus or minus. Huawei still has a slightly richer and more contrasty image.

Honor 30 Pro + flagship review
Honor 30 Pro + flagship review

In low light conditions (close to darkness), Honor produces a slightly whitish photo, and there is much less detail on it.

Honor 30 Pro + flagship review

Shiriki is filmed the same way at night.

Honor 30 Pro + flagship review

The 5X magnification on both devices in low light shows that the Honor shoots slightly better.

Honor 30 Pro + flagship review

What can I say. I don’t see a fundamental difference, but on the Honor side, the photo quality is higher when zoomed, and on the Huawei side – post-processing (saturation, colors, contrast).

When shooting with the main camera, you should pay attention to shots taken at a distance of 20-30 cm. Due to the peculiarities of the sensor and lens, not everything will be in sharpness.

The zoom lens works only in good lighting conditions, otherwise the camera software switches to the main module.

When shooting 4K 60fps video, the main camera works. The rest of the cameras “understand” only 30 fps. Zooming looks awful: switching from “width” to the main camera is sharp, and from the main to zoom – not only is it sharp, but also with a shift, with loss of focus, color distortion.

If you record video on the main camera, everything is fine. Other modules give below average quality.

There are two front cameras. One with a narrow viewing angle, the other with a wide one. I liked the quality. By the way, I recorded a review of the Honor 9C smartphone entirely on the front camera in 4K:

Unfortunately, the frame rate is only 30 fps.

Total: quite a flagship level of photo shooting; average video in all parameters; the front cameras are excellent, also in terms of video recording.

The camera interface is similar to what you’ve seen in all the latest Huawei devices.

Sample Photos

Memory, chipset and performance

Memory 8/256 GB, NM card, LPDDR4 RAM

The Honor 30 Pro + has a RAM speed of 29 MB / s, which is the flagship speed. Built-in memory – 000/850 Mb / s: reading is very good, but writing, like in budget smartphones.

Honor 30 Pro + flagship reviewHonor 30 Pro + flagship review

GPU: Mali-G76
NPU: Big Core + Tiny Core

The processor is the one installed in Honor 30 Pro, Huawei MatePad Pro, Huawei Mate 30/30 Pro, Huawei P40 / P40 Pro, – HiSilicon Kirin 990. I won’t talk about it for a long time, it is clear that this is the fastest processor in Huawei phones / Honor. In the Antutu test, it scores about 516 points (performance mode), in the throttling test it shows an excellent result in performance mode. Naturally, the smartphone digests all games and applications ..

Software

Here are a few words: it runs Google Android 10 and the proprietary shell MagicUI 3.1, aka EMUI 10. There are no Google services, AppGallery acts as an application store. Now Yandex Alice will be integrated into all Honor smartphones.

Musical possibilities

The Honor 30 Pro + smartphone is equipped with two stereo speakers. One on top is colloquial and one on the bottom. The volume is high, the sound is clear, but the quality is average: the upper one is clearly quieter with a narrower frequency range (110 Hz – 13 kHz); the lower one is louder, the frequency range is slightly wider (000 Hz – 90 Hz). If we compare Honor and Xiaomi Mi 16 Pro, then the latter has much better speakers.

Conclusion

Quite frankly, after writing a review of the Honor 30 Pro +, I was left with a mixed impression. On the one hand, in front of me is really a flagship in all respects, and on the other, it looks like a pale copy of Huawei’s top devices.

Most likely, this is due to the fact that in Honor everything is somehow a little unfinished:

  • The screen is bright, without PWM, but the resolution is low, the colors are muted.
  • Opening times are not the best. But here, apparently, 60/90 Hz plays a role. But I see no reason to set 60 Hz for the sake of the “life” of the device.
  • The cameras are not bad, but, for example, the 5X plus or minus zoom is the same as the 3X in the P40. There are shoals with video shooting too, especially when zooming and recording with a telephoto lens.
  • If the Huawei P40 Pro has an IR illumination near the front camera to unlock the screen at night, then Honor has just two cameras that take up a lot of space on the display. The time for playing yourself is long gone: you need one normal front camera, which should not be distracting.
  • Would like protection from water and dust

Honor 30 Pro + flagship review

On the positive side:

  • 90 Hz refresh rate
  • No PWM
  • High speed
  • Wireless and reversible charging
  • Cool back panel design

The review was written before the announcement, the cost was not disclosed to us. In China, the price is about 5 yuan, which is about 000 in rubles. For this money, the smartphone is interesting, but if its price rises to 50 rubles, it will be somewhat sad.

Standard competitors:

  • Oppo Find X2 – 73 rubles
  • Huawei P40 Pro – 70 rubles
  • OnePlus 8 Pro – 65 rubles
  • Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro – 65 rubles

But the best buy is the Huawei P30 Pro. The price is slightly less than 50 rubles. It is more affordable, there is GMS, 000X optics, a high-quality screen matrix. Among the minor shortcomings is the lack of a screen refresh rate of 5 Hz.
