Positioning

If you are interested in recalling the presentation of the new line of devices from the Chinese company OnePlus, then I highly recommend reading the article at the link below:

In short, we learn from it that the OnePlus 7T received the award for the best smartphone in 2020 according to the canceled exhibition MWC 2020. In addition, the 7T model burst into 4th place in the world in the premium smartphone segment. True, 4th place is a market share of just under 2% ? Another interesting thing: OnePlus became number 3 in the US 5G smartphone market.

The result of the presentation was the announcement of two new devices called OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro. I think it’s clear that the 8 Pro is the flagship device for 2020. This device was stuffed with technology so much that the host of the presentation called this smartphone “ultra-premium”.

Of course, in the 8 Pro you will find the fastest of the “Mohicans” – Qualcomm Snapdragon 865, “sea” of memory – up to 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of UFS 3.0 internal memory, one of the largest AMOLED displays with QHD + resolution and support for 120 Hz ( don’t forget about HDR10 +). Naturally, the device was “rewarded” with a 5th generation network, NFC technology, Bluetooth version 5.1 with aptX / aptXHD, and where without the ultra-modern Wi-Fi 6 standard.

And to make the OnePlus 8 Pro smartphone look even cooler in the eyes of potential buyers, the developers installed stereo speakers in the device and said hello to Huawei. Also, 8 Pro can charge wirelessly and give its energy to another device. Oh yes, I forgot to say that the new product received IP68 protection. Round!

In short, you realized that before you is the real “killer” of all current flagship devices. With the price I would not disappoint … But, alas, a miracle did not happen: the cost starts from 70 rubles. And here Huawei and Samsung say hello to OnePlus.

Appearance

At the presentation, a lot was said about the unusual premium design, materials, build quality, and so on. In my opinion, in front of me is a typical huge smartphone with a curved screen. For example, my review turned out to be a device in blue. It very much resembles the Huawei P30 Pro in the same color as the back and front panel. The only cool thing is the frosted glass on the back of the case. This is really the right decision: firstly, it is beautiful, secondly, it is practical, and thirdly, it is still an excellent solution in order to stand out among the host of identical glossy devices.

At the presentation it was said that the “back” feels like silk, they say, it is pleasant to touch it. This is true: the material is pleasant to the touch. However, the body is quite slippery. This is worth remembering.

There are three colors on sale: blue, light blue (for some reason it is called “glacial green”, although it is more turquoise) and black. For my taste, the colors are boring: there is neither yellow, nor red, nor green …

The dimensions of the phone are impressive – 165x74x8.5 mm, and the weight is almost 200 grams. The body is strongly elongated upward, but the width is not the greatest, so it is quite normal in the hand. For example: the dimensions of the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra are 166x76x8.8 mm, and the weight is 220 grams. The S20 Ultra has a 6.9-inch display. In general, if you used a device from Samsung, then OnePlus 8 Pro plus or minus is the same in size and weight.

I have been using the Huawei P40 for almost a month, so the 8 Pro from OnePlus is big for me, almost like a tablet. It is comfortable to use it at home or in the office, but moving around in public transport is such a decision: a smartphone sticks out of all pockets, hardly fits into a jacket, it is unrealistic to operate with one hand.

The device comes with a film already glued to the screen. On the one hand, this is good, but on the other hand, if you turned on the gesture control of the envelope, it is bad, since you constantly cling to the right and left edges of the film with your fingers.

As you already understood from the introduction, the OnePlus 8 Pro smartphone is IP68 water and dust resistant. It is commendable.

The controls are all typical:

  • top – microphone for noise reduction
  • bottom – slot for two SIM cards, USB-C, speaker and microphone
  • on the right is the power button and mode switch
  • left – volume rocker

On the back side there are four cameras, a three-section flash, laser autofocus and an additional microphone.

The speech speaker is loud, audible clearly, clean and pleasant!

I forgot to say that the OnePlus 8 Pro has a special vibration motor, similar to the Taptic Engine in the Apple iPhone.

Total: the smartphone is long, but quite easy to use with two hands; assembled with high quality, excellent materials.

OnePlus and Huawei P40

Display

To simplify the presentation of information, I will give a table with parameters in each section, so as not to rewrite the same thing in different words every time:

Screen 6.78 inches, Fluid AMOLED, 1440 x 3168, 513 ppi, 19.8: 9 ratio, 100% DCI-P3, HDR10 +, 120 Hz, 240 Hz touch processing, Corning Gorilla Glass

The measured brightness in manual mode is about 800 cd / m2 – this is a very high brightness. At least I had at most a couple of devices with such data. It is worth emphasizing that it is measured, and not information taken from the official website. Because some people also write big numbers, but how they came out is known only to the manufacturer.

I won’t talk about 120 Hz support for a long time. The interface is super smooth. In an article about Huawei P40, I wrote that I do not see the difference between 90 Hz and 120 Hz. So, I’m changing my opinion: I sat tightly with devices that give out 90 Hz and 120 Hz. At 90Hz, the interface is smooth and very different from 60Hz, while at 120Hz it’s lightning fast. I can’t describe it otherwise

Many reviewers have written about a bug with a screen on the OnePlus 8 Pro. I was doing well in all colors, at all brightness levels and at all viewing angles.

The OnePlus display reminded me of the Oppo Find X2 – a very similar experience.

By the way, I just noticed that the screens have almost the same parameters:

Oppo Find X2 display 6.7 inches, 19.8: 9 aspect ratio, 3168 × 1440 dots, AMOLED, HDR10 +, 120 Hz refresh rate, 240 Hz touch read rate, 8 + 2-bit color depth, 100% DCI-P3 color space, 513 PPI density , 800 nits brightness, 1200 nits brightness in HDR mode.
Flicker-free DC Dimming

In addition, even the measured ripple data is practically the same:

DC Dimming OFF

  • 100% brightness – 3% CP
  • 80% – 4%
  • 50% – 5%
  • 25% – 14%
  • 10% – 26%
  • 1% – 17%

DC Dimming ON

  • 100% brightness – 3% CP
  • 80% – 4%
  • 50% – 5%
  • 25% – 10%
  • 10% – 16%
  • 1% – 17%

Review of OnePlus 8 Pro - "killer" of flagships at a high price!

Even with the function disabled, there is almost no flicker. If DC Dimming is turned on, then the ripple ratio at 1% brightness is only 17%. Let me remind you that the norm is about 10 – 20%.

Total: a freaky screen in all respects – the highest resolution, support for HDR10 + and 10-bit, 120 Hz refresh rate and 240 Hz at the sensor, DC Dimming to prevent flickering.

Working hours

The battery capacity of the OnePlus 8 Pro is 4510 mAh with one “bank”. In my mode of use, the device gave out 7 hours of screen glow at automatic brightness. Approximately 9.5 hours of gaming, 6 hours of 4K video playback at maximum brightness, about 3 hours of continuous 4K video recording.

The device comes with a 5V / 2A, 5V / 6A power adapter. The maximum power is 30 watts. The battery is powered up to 100% in 1 hour and 15 minutes.

The device supports 30W fast wireless charging and reversible charging. Thus, I tried to charge the Huawei FreeBuds 3 headphone case. But for this technology to work, you need to enable it in the settings (battery settings).

Review of OnePlus 8 Pro - "killer" of flagships at a high price!

Since I had a Huawei P40 smartphone at hand, of course, I compared the shots from it with the shots on the OnePlus 8 Pro. In short, I did not notice a fundamental difference in quality: sometimes the 8 Pro takes a little more detail, sometimes the P40. The only advantage (probably) is blurring the background when shooting portraits: OnePlus blurs more effectively. On the other hand, fewer objects remain in sharpness.

During the day, I did not compare, since all modern smartphones shoot equally well.

The nuance is a 3x hybrid zoom. That is, there is not a 40X magnification, but, most likely, less. Actually, that’s why the frames on the Huawei PXNUMX look a little better.

Comparing the front cameras of the P40 and the 8 Pro once again showed full parity. Unless OnePlus turned on a strong noise reduction in the dark.

Video OnePlus 8 Pro shoots very well: wide dynamic range, clear colors, high details, smooth images. But it is better not to use the zoom – the picture is poor.

I tried to photograph the Moon, but nothing worked: the exposure constantly “flies”, and you get a bright round spot. In professional mode, you can select the desired parameters, however, you cannot switch to 3X zoom, in fact, just like Shirik. Therefore, in Pro mode, the moon looks like a dot in the night sky. The same Huawei P40 easily “takes pictures” of the Moon even without AI.

You can also shoot HDR video. I didn’t find anything special in it. Maybe the cloudy weather in Moscow is to blame. The device has a super stabilization setting. In this case, the video has almost no jitter, even if you run and jump with your phone in your hands.

Slow motion video only 240fps at 1080p resolution. With the Snapdragon 865 processor, I would like at least 960 fps.

Interface

Below are three buttons – shutter, switch to the front camera and enter the gallery. Slightly higher are the modes that are selected with a swipe (sometimes such movements are buggy and not selectable): photo, video, portraits, night photos, Pro, and so on.

Even higher is the choice of lens: “wide”, main and zoom. At the very top of the interface there is a timer, flash, resolution (12/48 MP for the “width” and the main camera), macro mode and effects. I will not list all the settings, since there are a lot of them. Below are screenshots.

Sample Photos

Video examples:

Memory and performance

Memory 8/12 GB LPDDR 5 / 128/256 GB UFS 3.0, no memory card slot

My phone version was 8/128 GB. It costs, I repeat, 70 rubles. The measured RAM speed is 000 MB / s, this is the average result that smartphones show for 17 – 500 rubles. The speed of the built-in memory is 20/000 Mb / s. The reading speed is excellent, but the writing is so-so.

Review of OnePlus 8 Pro - "killer" of flagships at a high price!Review of OnePlus 8 Pro - "killer" of flagships at a high price!

From the data obtained, it is worth concluding: the manufacturer has saved a lot on RAM.

Processor Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 (7nm +), Octa-core (1 × 2.84 GHz Kryo 585 & 3 × 2.42 GHz Kryo 585 & 4 × 1.8 GHz Kryo 585), Adreno 650 graphics

And that says it all – one of the fastest mobile processors. In Antutu, it gains almost 570 points and heats up like a stove: up to 000-45 degrees under load (the screen is around 47 degrees). In the throttling test (40 threads for 100 minutes), it shows an ideal result for 15 minutes, and then the performance starts to drop. After 8 minutes, it drops by almost 12% – from 30 GIPS to 322 GIPS. However, this does not affect games in any way: WOTs run at maximum parameters (HD textures, 236 fps), and even with simultaneous recording from the screen (UHD 120 fps).

Screenshots from the game WOT:

Operating system

This device runs on Google Android version 10 and proprietary shell Oxygen OS 10.5.6.IN11AA.

It almost does not differ from a pure system, but with its deep settings for everything and everyone. We will try to give you a complete overview of the OS. From what impressed:

  • Improving colors and contrast
  • Smoothing animation in applications – interpolation up to 60 fps
  • Horizon light – side lights
  • Customize the lock screen clock style
  • Selecting finger scanner effects
  • Choose the color of buttons, icons, etc.
  • Gesture control
  • Parallel apps like Messenger, Facebook or Instagram
  • OnePlus Lab: Sun Dimming, Frame Rate Up To 120, Dark Mode In Apps

Musical possibilities

The OnePlus 8 Pro has implemented stereo sound through the use of two speakers: speech plus speakerphone. The frequency range of the lower one is from 70 Hz to 16 Hz, the upper one is from 000 Hz to 100 Hz. The volume of the speech speaker is approximately half the volume of the main speaker.

In general, the impression from them is positive, but I did not experience any special feelings. Loudly? Loudly. Purely? Purely. The stereo base is not very wide.

There is almost nothing to write about the sound in the headphones, since there is no 3.5 mm audio output and no USB-C to mini-jack adapter. Everything is fine via Bluetooth, especially since the smartphone supports aptX, aptX HD, AAC and even LDAC. The device “understands” MP3, AAC, AAC +, WMA, AMR-NB, AMR-WB, WAV, FLAC, APE, OGG, MID, M4A, IMY, AC3, EAC3, EAC3-JOC, AC4.

Impressions

During the writing of the review, I did not leave the feeling that I was writing about the OPPO Find X2. The OnePlus 8 Pro is an almost complete copy of the Oppo gadget, or vice versa. Judge for yourself:

  • OPPO screen: 6.7-inch curved, QHD +, HDR10 +, 120Hz, 800cd / m2
    OnePlus screen: 6.78-inch curved, QHD +, HDR10 +, 120Hz, 800cd / m2
  • Both there and there are suppression of flicker, even values almost one to one.
  • The processor, memory are the same, even the RAM speed in OPPO and OnePlus is 17 MB / s. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, stereo speakers and other things are on par.

But the cameras are different and not in favor of OPPO. The Find X2 battery is 4200, the 8 Pro has a 4500 mAh battery.

The OPPO Find X2 smartphone costs 73 rubles, and the OnePlus 000 Pro is about the same.

Review of OnePlus 8 Pro - "killer" of flagships at a high price!Review of OnePlus 8 Pro - "killer" of flagships at a high price!

OnePlus unambiguous pluses:

  • Gorgeous screen in all respects
  • Good cameras
  • Long battery life
  • All the necessary communication options
  • Tactile feedback

I will not list everything, since the 8 Pro model has a maximum of various useful chips and technologies today. That is, it is a real flagship product.

What didn’t you like? Perhaps a weak zoom camera: it would have 5X optics. Well, the price – I would like to be around 50 rubles, since for 000 rubles the smartphone has competitors from Samsung, Huawei, OPPO and others.

Need to take? I think it’s definitely worth taking a closer look!

The author thanks the Kitbrand store for the OnePlus 8 Pro smartphone provided for review.
