Nokia 2.4 review: an affordable smartphone for 9 rubles

Positioning

Nokia 2.4 is positioned as a kind of workhorse. The smartphone is certified under the Android Enterprise Recommended program and will receive an update to Android 11, so it is likely that companies looking for a reliable smartphone running pure Android with long-term support and a battery life of up to 2 days may be interested in them. As selling elements, Nokia itself singles out the following:

  • Upgrade to Android 11;
  • Operating system updates are available for two years, and security updates are available for three years;
  • Battery 4 500 mAh, which will give 2 days of battery life;
  • Good camera quality even in low light conditions;
  • Bright 6.5 ”HD + screen with an aspect ratio of 20: 9;
  • Finnish design;
  • When buying a Clear Case and WH-301 headphones for 1 rubles. as a gift.

Appearance

  • Right side: power button, volume button.
  • Left-hand side: button for Google Assistant (you cannot reassign the button, but you can disable it), tray for SIM cards and microSD.
  • Bottom end: microphone, microUSB, speaker.
  • Upper butt: microphone, 3.5 mm jack.
  • Back: 2 cameras, flash, fingerprint scanner.
  • Front side: 6.5-inch screen, front camera, speaker mesh.

The design of the smartphone pleases. Usually, manufacturers do not bother with the design of inexpensive devices, using the developments of higher models, adjusted for the general reduction in cost. The logic is simple: minimum costs. But in this case, you can see that the designers spent time, thanks to which the Nokia 3.4 and 2.4 series received a pleasant matte textured plastic case with a slight gradient.

The smartphone turned out to be modest, but beautiful. I can indirectly judge this by at least the fact that usually on my table there are several devices with their backs up (otherwise I cannot distinguish). Now these are Xiaomi Mi10T, Motorola e7 +, two realme and, of course, Nokia 2.4. I noticed that my girlfriend, approaching the table, instinctively regularly reached for the Nokia 2.4 and Xiaomi Mi 10T (both smartphones are similar in color) in order to turn the smartphones in their hands. I explain this by the fact that against the background of glossy mirrored backs, matte soothing colors especially attract attention.

Screen

The smartphone has a nice 6.5-inch IPS LCD screen. It has good color rendering. It’s 100% sRGB, but there is a miss with green. The measured brightness is 450 nits. This is a value that allows you to work with a smartphone in clear weather outdoors. The screen will not be enough in the bright sun, but you can easily read information from it.

The screen settings are standard. There is a dark theme, there are settings for the night mode, when the colors of the blue spectrum are removed in the evenings, you can adjust the color temperature or font size.

Performance

Responsible for performance is the MediaTek Helio P22 processor and 2 GB of RAM. Speaking about the performance of a smartphone, I would like to say that it is energy efficient. MediaTek Helio P22 is made on the 12 nm process technology and was presented in 2018 as a chipset for smartphones in the mid-price segments. And overall it’s a great chipset.

The chipset sags under load

You can choose combinations for purchase – 2/32 GB or 3/64 GB of memory. In the option provided for review, 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB are for the drive. The user has 18 GB of memory available.

I have an engineering sample on my review, and the smartphone is still in the pre-order status, so we need to look at what will be there in the product for sale. So far, I see that the perception of the smartphone is spoiled by the slow RAM. The speed is 3 644 Mb / s, so the device cannot be called nimble.

Android is an excellent operating system that sets the necessary settings for games by itself, and also allows you to download from the application store only those games that should run well on your smartphone. Even Call of Duty Mobile can be installed on Nokia 2.4. The MediaTek P22 chipset allows you to play games, however 2 GB of RAM is not enough. Nokia 2.4 is more of a smartphone for casual games (balls, quests, etc.).

Communication capabilities

For about a week I used my smartphone, installing a second SIM-card there, which is usually called by couriers delivering equipment. There are no complaints about the phone’s capabilities. The smartphone clearly transmits speech, the speaker is quite loud to talk while walking along the road. Since this is almost pure Android, a standard dialer from Google is installed here. There is no recording of conversations.

GPS works pretty well. The smartphone has a compass, that is, the map shows in which direction you turned.

The smartphone has an FM radio that requires headphones to work. The lack of NFC can be noted as a minus. But its presence in smartphones up to 10 thousand rubles is rather an exception to the rule.

Battery life

Battery life is one of the stated advantages of a smartphone. And the smartphone is really capable of delivering 2 days of battery life with normal use. The smartphone gives out 13 hours, which is when watching a video at maximum brightness, which is during a Wi-Fi test. Below is a screenshot from PC Mark. This test simulates everyday user loads, so these are the closest values to reality.

There is also a fly in the ointment. The smartphone charges via microUSB and only supports 5W slow charging. Accordingly, in half an hour the smartphone will charge 15 percent. And a full charge takes almost 3.5 hours, that is, it makes sense to set it to charge at night.

Camera

The main camera is a system of two modules – 13 MP + 2 MP. The second camera is responsible for the depth effect. The camera application has typical settings. You can turn off the shutter sound or adjust the response to a long press of the shutter button (continuous shooting or video recording). There is no so-called “Pro” mode in the camera. But there is Google Lens, so you can point your smartphone at a plant or some thing, and the device will try to recognize what it sees on the screen.

Frankly speaking, the quality of the shooting made me happy. While walking along the gray street and poking with frozen fingers at the screen, it seemed to me that the result was so-so. But after looking at the pictures on the computer, I was pleasantly surprised. Good color rendering, excellent detail. Artificial intelligence even coped with photographing the shades and transmitted all the shades of gray on the street.

Here are other examples of daytime photography.

Nokia says the 2.4 has excellent night mode. Here are some night shots. But I would attribute the statement more likely to the daytime shots presented above, that the smartphone shoots well in low light conditions. And now we have such a time that even at 14 o’clock it seems as if it is already dusk. Although it is night shots, in general, also nothing.

The weather app says it’s +2 degrees outside, which feels like -3, so portraiture examples are just that.

But the front camera copes with selfies worse.

Impression and competitors

The smartphone runs on pure Android, that is, the system has a minimum of preinstalled applications, and those that exist can be removed. I am not a fan of pure Android, as it assumes that the user himself will install all the applications he needs. So you need to look for a weather widget and even little things like a calculator. Do you know how difficult it is to find a free calculator without ads? And somehow the hand does not rise to buy a “calculator”.

Nokia 2.4 review: an affordable smartphone for 9 rubles

In conclusion, we can say that the smartphone fully confirms the selling elements declared in the positioning – battery life, camera quality, pleasant design, bright screen. I recommend that you definitely hold your smartphone in your hands before buying, since the engineering test sample was thoughtful (this is quite forgivable for an engineering sample, but it is important that this is not the case in commercial samples).

However, the market for Nokia 2.4 will have a hard time, as its direct competitor is the Motorola Moto E7 Plus, which at the same price offers a 5000 mAh battery + 10 W charging, a slightly more modern chipset, 4/64 GB of memory and a 48 MP camera. Motorola is also a champion of pure Android, which only adds gesture functions, as well as a number of standard applications (the same calculator is there). The Moto E7 Plus review will launch in early December.
