Positioning

Nokia 5310 XpressMusic was launched in 2007 at a price of 225 euros. It was an interesting phone based on the S40 platform 5th version. In addition to the number keys, the device had an unusual design solution: there were music control buttons next to the screen. The main connectors were protected by plugs. And on the back of the phone was a big cheeky “Nokia” sign. In terms of design, the phone was good. He stood out and attracted attention. A dedicated audio chip was responsible for the musical component.

In 2020, the new Nokia continues to rethink the legacy of days gone by. Earlier the legendary model Nokia 3310 was presented to the public, then the “banana” Nokia 8110. Now it’s the turn of the XpressMusic series.

As the main selling features, the manufacturer highlights:

  • Front-facing stereo speakers with increased volume
  • FM radio with built-in antenna
  • Separate buttons for music control on the case
  • Support for memory cards up to 32 GB
  • Long battery life
  • Slightly updated yet classic design

The price of the new Nokia 5310 XpressMusic is 3 rubles.

Appearance

The phone is visually good. There are two colors: black and white. Both options use red elements. Of course, you should take the white version. It’s more interesting. Although, by the way, the original 5310 was in a gray case.

Great build quality, looks like candy. At the top there is a headphone jack and microUSB for charging.

Red inserts on the sides. On the right side, they are responsible for controlling the music, and on the other, for adjusting the volume. The inserts are made of ordinary plastic. Although tactilely there would be like something rubberized.

The phone has a camera with a flashlight.

There is a recess at the bottom of the back cover to pick up and remove. There is a compartment for the battery, two SIM cards and a microSD memory card. There is no hot swap: you turn it off, take out the battery, change it and turn it on again. The phone needs large ancient SIM cards. I always knew that I didn’t throw away plastic from old SIM cards for a reason. If you buy Nokia as a spare phone, then immediately charge the SIM card frame for the future. Otherwise, you will get tired of attaching the nano-SIM clearly to the contacts to make it work.

The front panel houses two stereo speakers.

I would like to note right away that the new Nokia only imitates the old design. These are completely different phones. For example, the original 5310 had an audio chip and played on sound quality with headphones. The 2020 model has front-facing stereo speakers, that is, the device is aimed at being used as a wireless speaker. For comparison, here is a photo of the original Nokia.

Display and keyboard

Probably, this is not clear from the photo, but I want to assure you that the most powerful 2.4-inch display has a sufficient margin of brightness to remain readable even in bright sunlight. At first I even thought, Super Retina XDR, but no, just TFT, 2.4 inches, 320 x 240 pixels.

Here are two examples of one picture of what it looks like indoors and outdoors (I got into the car, and then quickly got out of it to give you a comprehensive experience!)

The screen has excellent color reproduction. You can enjoy looking at the photos you have taken.

The phone has a wonderful keypad. The buttons have perfect elasticity. You press, and your heart rejoices! It has been a long time since I felt that way. The center button is glossy and the keyboard itself is matte. The phone is not covered with fingerprints.

Sound and musical capabilities

The phone has two front speakers. He can play MP3 files from a flash drive. There is also a radio that works without a headset. I turned on this Business FM, you walk and listen.

Review of the new Nokia 5310 XpressMusic

As a wireless speaker for a company, the phone is unlikely to pull, but as a personal speaker it fits perfectly. The sound for its price category is good, clean. Doesn’t wheeze at maximum volume. The volume margin is above average – 83 dB. Phones play music from built-in speakers in a range of 70 to 77 dB.

It’s easy to play music – dropped it on a USB flash drive, opened the player, and off you go! Playlists are not supported, but songs can be added to favorites. It is also possible to play in random order and repeat all songs or the current track.

Review of the new Nokia 5310 XpressMusic

While playing the radio, you can use the side rewind buttons to scroll through the radio stations.

One of the pleasant features is the presence of an equalizer.

Camera

The Nokia 5310 XpressMusic has an incredible camera that lets you take photos and videos to unleash your creativity!

The interface of the camera is laconic, but capacious.

Review of the new Nokia 5310 XpressMusic

But there are many interesting features hidden in the settings. There are even filters (b / w, sepia, multi-color tints, color inversion) and a night mode. Or you can take a whole series of pictures at once! It is unlikely that you will do this.

Operating system

The start screen shows the status of the SIM cards. The operator must provide 2G services. Otherwise it won’t work. There is also a quick transition to the camera, the main menu screen, and if you click the “Go” option, a list of quick access to the flashlight, keyboard lock, etc. will open. The left key is configurable. You can select the options to be displayed in the list and their order.

Review of the new Nokia 5310 XpressMusicReview of the new Nokia 5310 XpressMusic

I also want to note that this list contains the option “Mob. Full construction”. This is the mobile internet. The phone does not have separate icons with arrows, as on phones, so you just need to remember whether the Internet is on or not. Although Nokia 5310 consumes minimal amount of internet. Only 200 MB was used to open several pages in the browser and install a couple of toys (1.5 KB each).

The main menu can be displayed in a grid of different sizes, or simply as a list.

Opera is used as a browser in the phone. By the way, the browser can be launched by holding down the “zero” button.

Review of the new Nokia 5310 XpressMusicReview of the new Nokia 5310 XpressMusic

There is a Facebook icon, but it’s still Opera that opens the Facebook mobile page. There is a timer, stopwatch, flashlight, calculator, calendar, notes and a file manager. But there is no dictaphone. But there is a weather application! You need to enter the city yourself, but then everything is available! Weather both by the day and by the hour!

Review of the new Nokia 5310 XpressMusic

The phone has a built-in app store. There games from Gameloft are available, there are tabs “Other applications”, “Ringtones”, “Wallpapers”. However, so far only the games tab is working. The rest do not open. Apparently, they will add it in the future.

Review of the new Nokia 5310 XpressMusicReview of the new Nokia 5310 XpressMusic

Of course, Nokia 5310 XpressMusic has all the classic bells and whistles (like quick access on the keys, etc.). But the main feature that distinguishes Nokia from most rootless dialers is the ability to drop the address book via Bluetooth!

Review of the new Nokia 5310 XpressMusicReview of the new Nokia 5310 XpressMusic

But the notebook is simple. Two numbers, you can set a picture or take a photo on a contact.

Review of the new Nokia 5310 XpressMusic

The Nokia 5310 has an S30 + based operating system. Symbian was originally written by inertia. However, despite the similar name, S30 + is a completely different operating system, which has nothing to do with the classic S30. S30 + can even be called a joint development of MediaTek and Nokia. Initially introduced in 2013, the S30 + only supported MediaTek’s proprietary MAUI Runtime Environment. But from time to time there are phones that support J2ME.

The original Nokia 5310 was on the s40 5th edition. By the way, this is how the original interface looked like.

Review of the new Nokia 5310 XpressMusicReview of the new Nokia 5310 XpressMusic

S30 + games and applications are downloaded in .vxp format. On thematic sites you can find catalogs with games. Installing is simple: I downloaded the vxp file, uploaded it to a USB flash drive, and launched it using the file manager. However, many of the programs and games I found did not work. As I understand it, you only need to search for applications that have been tested on the appropriate MediaTek chipsets.

Games

I decided to devote a separate segment to games. From free games there is “Snake”.

Review of the new Nokia 5310 XpressMusic

But the rest of the games are paid. The games are available both in the app store, and several paid games are scattered right in the main menu. These are Asphalt 6, Assassin’s Creed, Doodle Jump. These are demo samples. There are 3 attempts, 90 seconds each, then the game is interrupted. And he offers to buy it for 100 rubles. I didn’t like the fact that games cannot be removed from the menu (well, or I didn’t succeed!).

An example of downloading a game.

Review of the new Nokia 5310 XpressMusicReview of the new Nokia 5310 XpressMusicReview of the new Nokia 5310 XpressMusicReview of the new Nokia 5310 XpressMusic

There are many games, but they all cost money.

Review of the new Nokia 5310 XpressMusic

Impressions (and battery life)

The new Nokia XpressMusic is, of course, not the original Nokia either in form or in content. However, this is a solid push-button dialer, which is better than the competition in terms of quality, ergonomics and overall thoughtfulness. Otherwise, do not expect miracles such as the cinematic quality of the picture on the screen (SMS and pictures, okay? That’s good!) Or a powerful game component (racing and Tetris? That’s great!). This is just a high-quality dialer, communication with which will give you a minimum of discomfort (if you imagine that you will use it after your smartphone).

One battery charge lasts for 5 days. But there are options. Will you play games, turn off the mobile Internet, or listen to music loudly. If you load the phone to the fullest, that is, with games, listening to the radio and the Internet on, then the operating time will be 3 full days.

A couple of photos of the phone in hand:

Review of the new Nokia 5310 XpressMusicReview of the new Nokia 5310 XpressMusic

The phone can be praised for its sound, alarm volume, and the ability to copy an address book via Bluetooth. And also for being able to install applications. Of the minuses – the presence of built-in games that cannot be removed by simple methods, as well as the general scarcity of games and applications on the Internet.

The phone is perfect as a player and dialer. I would approach the purchase of such a phone for schoolchildren with caution, since the phone has the ability to buy games according to the old scheme of “sending an SMS for 99 rubles to a short number”. Accordingly, it is quite difficult to restrict a child from buying. Well, or he is very reasonable and obedient.

Review of the new Nokia 5310 XpressMusic

I will tell you my opinion in the end. It seems to me that Nokia would receive significant respect if it took and released the Nokia 5310 on the same original Symbian s40 5th Edition, so that those who want to mess around would have access to all the original software that can still be found on the Internet. However, these are all dreams, because HMD Global does not have the corresponding patents. And, probably, it is commercially unjustified to produce simple dialers with such an expensive operating system. Perhaps this is my main sadness after talking with the phone. The rest is a nice little thing that will delight.
