I usually buy external SSDs, no additional enclosures are required for them. But then the trivial task arose to transfer all the data from the old SSD on the laptop to the new SSD, as well as mark the remaining space for an additional logical drive. In fact, I needed to make a complete copy of my daughter’s laptop SSD in order to then insert a new disk in place of the old one and everything would work with a bang. The laptop has an SSD with a SATA connector, a 2.5-inch form factor. I bought a 4 TB Samsung EVO 870 drive, and then I began to look at what cases there are for such drives.

There are enough proposals, there are even “luxury” cases with leather covers, but they are expensive and look like something very Chinese. Specifically Chinese. I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on a case, which will most likely come in handy once at most. Likewise, I didn’t want to dance with a tambourine making a copy of the partition to an external drive, then install a new SSD, start the system on it and then copy the old partition there. It is difficult and long, although it is possible that you will think otherwise.

Scrolling through the offers, I chose an external case from Transcend, called the StoreJet line, and then the model number – 25CK3. I would venture to suggest that 25 is a 2.5-inch form factor designation, and CK3 is probably the third version of such a product.

The cost of the case is 1400 rubles, in a small box there is a Phillips screwdriver, three screws, the case itself and instructions. Since my SSD is large enough, it fits like a glove in the case, you do not need to glue a special insert so that the SSD does not dangle. SATA interface, connection is simple, any student can handle it.

It took me five minutes to assemble the entire structure, even if this is the first time you are doing it, then no problems should arise. I liked the fact that the outer cover is made of silicone, it is stretched over the plastic.

The plastic is far from ideal, it is clear that the product is not the best, but it does not scare away. The case is large enough, which is rather a minus if you want to constantly carry it around with you. You can compare it with an external 10000 mAh battery, for some reason I have such an association.

The case is fastened with three screws; you cannot get an SSD or HDD on the road. But it is possible that this is not necessary. There is a separate key for automatic creation of archives, but you will need to install software from Transcend, it is available for both Windows and MacOS. I did not have such a task, but out of curiosity I looked what it was and immediately took down the softphone, I did not find anything useful in it.

Initially, the EVO 870 is clean, so I connected the drive to my computer, created the partitions I needed on it, copied the data from the laptop. Then I spun the case again and inserted the old SSD from my daughter’s laptop into it, it turned out to be a kind of external drive with her system (just in case, although I don’t know why it might come in handy). It may be worth adapting this external drive for data storage, use it as such.

The data transfer rate is up to 5 Gbps, in practice it is lower, but not critical. The USB connector is a little loose in the case, but it also doesn’t look like it will fall off over time.

I solved my problem, the price of 1400 rubles does not look prohibitively high, since with the help of a new SSD I updated a 7-year-old laptop for a child, the only problem was the lack of free space, the inconvenience of constantly using an external drive to defeat this problem. Surprisingly, this case from Transcend has become for me a very utilitarian thing that is needed in the moment, and then you can safely forget about it. In the end, the described task of transferring one SSD to another is extremely rare. But this is one way how you can solve this issue. I was surprised to realize that many people far from computers do not realize that this was possible, so I decided to write this short text, I hope it will come in handy when, instead of buying a new laptop, you decide to update your old man (but here, of course, it all depends on the type SSD, maybe everything is much simpler or more complicated for you).
