Positioning
The positioning of this model is very simple – the most advanced Huawei tablet, to say the least – of all Android tablets available at the moment.
The new product is called the MatePad Pro. An extremely “apt” name, but it is remembered as “good”: therefore, in the video review, I indicated it as a MediaPad, then as a MediaBook, then as a MacBook …
This MatePad Pro model has been pumped in full: 10.8-inch screen with WQXGA resolution, a powerful Kirin 990 processor, 6 GB of RAM, 128 GB of internal memory, a capacious 7250 mAh battery, wireless and reverse charging, support for a special plug-in keyboard and an electronic pen M -Pencil. And the tablet also has 4 speakers and as many as 5 microphones (I’ll talk about them too).
A separate option is PC mode: in this case, the tablet interface turns into a simplified version of the shell of a certain operating system such as Windows. This thing can impress!
The device is sold in two versions: the Wi-Fi version for 45 rubles, and the LTE version for 000 rubles. In addition, various promotions are constantly held on the official website: for example, now there is a discount of 50 rubles and an M-pencil stylus is a gift.
Graphic Design
Despite the impressive diagonal of almost 11 inches, the tablet is perceived as a compact device. This is probably due to the use of large smartphones on an ongoing basis, for example, the Mate 30 Pro and P30 Pro. I think about 5 years ago, the MatePad Pro would have seemed just a huge tablet. However, here it should be understood that the device has thin screen frames, small body thickness and weight.
The dimensions of the tablet are 246x159x7,2 / 7,9 mm, and the weight is about 450 grams. The Huawei MatePad Pro tablet resembles the Honor 20, which has been sitting on self-isolation all this time. That is, an enlarged smartphone with a hole for the camera on the front panel.
On the one hand, everything is beautiful, but on the other hand, it is not very convenient and practical: thin frames suggest careful handling of the tablet so as not to touch the screen with your palm. No, false alarms are minimal, but lying on the couch is uncomfortable to hold the device, since there is simply nothing to grab onto.
It is sold in China in four colors: orange, white, green and gray. Interestingly, depending on the color, the back panel will be either leather coated (orange / green) or matte fiberglass (white / gray). In my review, the device was in gray. A very durable coating, since not a single scratch has appeared on the back panel for almost a month of use. Fingerprints are almost invisible, and if you install a keyboard cover, they are completely irrelevant.
By the way, the side frames are made of magnesium alloy. The front panel is protected by glass. It is coated with an oleophobic coating. The quality is not bad, but it could be better.
In general, the MatePad Pro seemed to me a sturdy, reliable device with excellent assembly and materials: no squeaks, no backlash, the back panel does not bend to the battery.
Important Notice: The MatePad Pro is not water and dust resistant. Of course, something minimal is present, but I definitely did not dare to take it with me to the shower.
What’s with the elements? If you hold the tablet horizontally, then on the left is the power button, on the top left is the volume rocker key, on the bottom edge is the slot for the NM memory card.
In addition, the device has as many as 5 microphones supposedly for noise suppression and high-quality speech recording. Four on the top, and the fifth near the main camera.
And here the location of the microphones played a cruel joke. If the tablet is held vertically in the right hand, then the main microphones will be closed, respectively, the sound will be either quiet or distorted. In addition, this very noise reduction works just awful: almost all high frequencies are cut out, the sound turns out to be somewhat boisterous with poorly audible, gurgling notes. Microphones also have low sensitivity: in order to record a voice message or chat in Zoom, you have to speak either very loudly or directly into the microphones.
Hopefully the developers read this review and:

There are two speakers on the right and left of the case. The official website says:
“The compact Huawei MatePad Pro features a 4-channel audio system with 4 speakers.” It is difficult to check if there are four separate channels. The impression is that each of the pairs of speakers is doing parallel work. For what? It’s very simple: in any position of the device, you can accidentally cover the sound output hole. Even if you cover the two holes on opposite sides, the sound will travel through the other two. I often had this in a horizontal mode of use.
The MatePad Pro also has a USB-C connector and a notification light located in the center area to the left of the display. The glow is weak, so it is noticeable only in the evening.
In circulation
Until the moment I received the Huawei Smart Magnetic Keyboard case, the tablet was used almost always in an upright position. It’s like a big smartphone in front of me. Thus, the information was perceived as conveniently as possible, since there are very few adapted programs for tablets on Google Android. The same Twitter looks stretched, photos are displayed in full screen, displaying only one tweet on the screen. Browsers display sites in different ways: where there is a mobile version, they look poor, where under a PC it is quite normal.
Instagram and TikTok do not even have the ability to display photos / videos in landscape format: the tablet automatically rotates the application interface to vertical mode. Messenger Facebook stretches the interface to its width, and so does WhatsApp.
But Telegram, Yandex.Mail, VKontakte form the picture correctly: on the left – contacts, on the right – messages.
Therefore, it was necessary to hold the MatePad Pro in a vertical format.
As I already wrote, in this case, the right hand can cover the microphones. At first, I did not even understand what was the matter: I recorded the sound, but it is of poor quality, it is not heard well.
I also wrote about this, but I repeat that because of the thin frames, it is inconvenient to hold the tablet while lying down: often the palm accidentally touched the edges and “Back” worked (in case you turned on the gesture control).
Another of the unpleasant moments associated with gesture control. When working with the keyboard and repeatedly pressing the extreme buttons (for example, “Delete”, “Enter”), “Back” again worked. As a result, you could write a long text, then press a couple of times to “delete” an extra character, and the program would close without saving the typed text.
You can turn off gesture control, but in this case, using the tablet becomes uncomfortable. So think about what matters most to you: gestures or typing.
Holding your tablet horizontally will inevitably cover the speaker on the right and / or left. Therefore, the duplicate speakers located above help. This is really handy, especially with toys.
And it is also convenient to “wake up” the tablet with a double tap on the screen. You yourself understand how uncomfortable it would be to press the power button every time.
And the last very strange thing: MatePad Pro does not know how to turn to the right side (if held vertically) and 180 degrees. Most likely, this is due to the front camera located in the upper right corner: they say, if you stream yourself in Zoom, the image will be broadcast from bottom to top.

The maximum screen brightness is 500 cd / m2 in manual mode. This value was quite enough even when viewing information under the bright sun. Indoors, the brightness rarely “flew away” above 50%. At night, the minimum parameters are comfortable, but the contrast is low, so the brightness should be raised a little, at least to the level of 5 – 10%.
In general, the screen is pleasant: the colors are juicy, there is no PWM, the viewing angles are large. About permission. Frankly speaking, I was surprised when I saw 2560 × 1600 pixels in the technical characteristics. I was sure that it was definitely QHD. That is, the image is clear, fonts are read perfectly even without using the “PC mode” in the browser.
Probably, in the MatePad Pro I would like to support the screen refresh rate of 90 Hz. Together with EMUI 10, the system would fly.
The settings have dark mode, smart resolution, color and eye protection. The last point has a natural tone. If such a thing is not interesting in smartphones, then it is quite appropriate here: when you sit in a room with warm glow lamps, the screen also shows a picture with a slight yellowish tint. Right now, I turned off the natural tone, and it became completely unpleasant: the display “flooded” with a light blue color.
Total: an excellent screen for those who preserve their eyesight – a wide range of brightness, high resolution, no PWM!
Working hours
The MatePad Pro uses a 7250 mAh battery. In fact, this is the usual meaning for most of these devices.
Since I had a tablet as the main device, that is, the smartphone was on the sidelines only for calls, the operating time pleased me: 10 hours of screen glow on automatic brightness and 48 hours of use. Well, or one day when you endlessly torment the tablet.
These 10 hours included: frequent correspondence on social networks (WhatsApp, Telegram, VK), periodic views of YouTube for 30-40 minutes, reading news in a browser or Twitter. In short, everything is the same as what I did on my smartphone.
But with charging Huawei they were greedy: in a set of 20 watts. It charges like this:
This model has reversible charging. Turn on the corresponding option in the section about the battery and put the device on the back of the tablet directly on the inscription “HUAWEI”.

As you understand, the cameras in the tablet are present just in case and are not designed to surprise their owner with high quality photos and videos. Actually, this is the case with the cameras of the MatePad Pro.
Yes, in general, the photos are good for a tablet, but autofocus is very slow, it often misses the mark, lathers in the dark, and so on. That is, this is the level of the camera installed in the device for 10 rubles.
Video tablet can shoot in 4K 30 fps or 1080p at 30/60 fps. The clips themselves are of high quality, but autofocus constantly gets lost, even if you shoot in good lighting conditions.
The front camera is of average quality, the angle would be wider. In addition, it is positioned extremely poorly: for example, in a video conference, you will be somewhere on the right on the screen, since the camera shoots from the left to the right side. A very strange decision. The camera should be positioned at the top in the center, like on laptops, since you are positioning the device as some kind of laptop replacement.
I will not dwell on the cameras of the tablet for a long time, since in such devices this is not the main thing and has never been a priority. Although Apple got confused and even inserted lidar into their new iPad.
The camera interface is exactly the same as in Huawei / Honor smartphones.

In fact, there is nothing to write about here. Everything works well. The downside is no NFC. It is clear that the tablet does not need it, but what if you need to charge the Troika card? Oh yes – self-isolation, stay at home.

Here is the most vigorous chipset from Huawei, which is installed in the latest devices of the company. Fast, almost does not heat up, consumes little. There is no throttling even at maximum loads, in the Antutu test it gains 450 points – less by 000 than the Qualcomm Snapdragon 100. However, the latter heats up so that you can bake a charlotte.
Of course, with games on this tablet, everything is just fine. However, as with any other application.
Software, troubles and chips
Tablet Huawei MatePad Pro runs on the operating system Google Android version 10 and the proprietary shell EMUI 10. Naturally, the device is devoid of “Google” services.
What did you encounter while using a tablet without support from Google?
The first thing I did was install APKPure. This is a service that allows you to install applications that are available in the Google Play Store. This APKPure contains almost all the necessary programs, even tricky ones like A1Bench and Disk Speed test (memory test), KineMaster (video editor).
However, I was greatly surprised by the behavior of the World of Tanks game, which I got from the official AppGallery. Not only did it not load, it also wrote on the start screen about the lack of Google services. In general, it was not possible to play it.
But Call of Duty went smoothly.
I immediately answer the question related to notifications, for example, from WhatsApp. There are notifications.
A little about desktop mode, or “PC mode”. To launch it, you need to click on the icon in the notification panel. The screen plunges into a dark theme, the display shows the inscription “Huawei desktop”, and after a couple of seconds you find yourself in the familiar interface reminiscent of Windows.
On the screen you see icons, at the bottom left – something like the “Start” button with all applications, at the bottom in the center – the taskbar with minimized programs, at the bottom right – clock, battery, connections. There, by clicking, the “Notification Center” is launched, just like on Windows: there are switches and notifications from programs.
The desktop can display a large number of applications in separate windows. I didn’t count the maximum number, but 10 was accurate.
The window can be resized in width and height, moved, minimized to the taskbar, maximized to full screen, or closed.
Folders and text files are easily created on the desktop. You can move various documents to this folder: open a window with photos (only through the Files program) and drag them into the folder.
Quite an interesting mode if you urgently need to work in a multi-window format, where several programs will be launched: for example, communication in Telegram and typing in WPS Office.
And in normal tablet operation, there is an App Multiplier for this. This is something like a multi-window of one application. For example, you start “Yandex.Mail”, click on “Write a letter”, and text entry opens in a separate window next to it. That is, the entire interface remains on the left, and on the right – additional menus.
There are few such applications: I had “Health”, “Yandex.Disk”, “Yandex.Mail”, “Zen”.
However, there are two more cool things. The first is a separate one window of some application. As if the image of the smartphone interface appeared on the main screen. The second is the simultaneous display of two programs: one on the left, the other on the right. You can change the width of the window. Looks beautiful.
And Huawei also has the Multi-screen technology. This is when your smartphone completely mirrors the picture onto the tablet screen. You can also control your smartphone there. It’s a funny thing.

Musical possibilities
As you already know, the MatePad Pro is equipped with four speakers. They sound very loud, clear, even a little bassist. Frequency response approximately 90 Hz to 16 Hz. Well, that is, quite a “boombox”. The stereo effect is pronounced, since the speakers are separated by a relatively large distance (when compared with smartphones, of course).
The tablet comes with a USB-C to 3.5 mm adapter. Why is not very clear, but if it’s free, then you can. The sound in the “ears” is of high quality. But I used either FreeBuds 3 or Magic EarBuds almost all the time.
Impressions
An important component of a successful operating system is the optimization of programs for certain devices. For example, at Apple, all devices are linked and at the same time programs are linked. I bought a MacBook – all applications are optimized for screen resolution, processor, memory, and so on. I bought an iPad and got a real bedside center for working with professional programs.
Huawei is going about the same way now. With the MatePad Pro, you enter the Huawei ecosystem, where your P40 can easily communicate with your tablet and even your laptop. Where “own” applications allow you to unleash the full potential of devices: “PC mode”, “Multi-screen”, work in several windows on one screen, “App Multiplier” mode, when one application on one screen opens access to content in two windows.
From a technical point of view, there are no questions about the MatePad Pro – the hardware is top-end with all that it implies.
The most important thing remains – the operating system Google on the tablet. Of course, this is not pain and sadness, but close to that. And also when you do not have access to the usual Google Play … Huawei – that’s it! ?
The conclusion will be very simple: if you are looking for an Android tablet with the best parameters, then there are only two options – either the Huawei MatePad Pro or the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6. The difference in price is 10 rubles. And what about “specs”?
Samsung has a slightly larger screen, and it is SuperAMOLED (for the eyes, it seems to me, IPS is still better), but slightly less PPI; the same amount of memory; Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor – last year’s “treadmill”; operating time is similar to Huawei. Bonus – pen and keyboard cover support.
In this case, Samsung fans will buy the Tab S6 without options, and the rest will buy the MatePad Pro. And those who have not decided, most likely, will look towards the Apple iPad Pro 11 (second generation) for 70 rubles or iPad Air (third generation) for 000 rubles.
I will not include “aliexpress” here, because this is a slightly different story – not about big money.
