Positioning
OPPO has been trying to take the Russian market by storm for several years, just like realme and Vivo, brothers or sisters of this brand, how to look. Even collectively, these companies have not turned into a strong player who dictates their own terms of play to the market, and after unsuccessful attempts to sell models at high prices, the stage comes when you want to offer something more affordable for the mass buyer, to bet on the middle segment. And the crisis is not the time when you need to try to sell high-end models, they will still not be in such demand as the A-brands, they will make up an insignificant fraction of their sales.
The right decision is to choose a mass model, which can become interesting in terms of price / quality ratio and offer an interesting set of solutions. And the role of such a model at the end of 2020, the beginning of next year, comes Reno 4 Lite. OPPO wants to achieve a good price / quality ratio. This model is interesting to me because it characterizes well the basic set of functions from second-tier Chinese brands, this is what we will see as a typical offer in the 25-28 thousand rubles price group. Although for the beginning of 2021 it may be a segment of 20-25 thousand rubles, everything on the market is changing rapidly. Let’s take a look at this solution and what it offers to the consumer.
Design, dimensions, controls
Manufacturers try to present such models so that they look attractive, are practical, but not expensive for them. Therefore, here is exactly the same approach: the body is made of plastic, it is not covered by anything. But due to the multi-layer painting, the plastic shimmers in the light, plays.
They obviously tried to create the design for the iPhone, but at the same time they did not forget about Huawei and Samsung. Curved edges, but the camera block is like in the iPhone.
Due to the lack of a matte finish, handprints remain on the case, but they are not as noticeable as on the glass backs of smartphones or on glossy plastic. And in this aspect, the device is practical.
The rejection of metal and glass led to the fact that the device is quite light for its size – 164 grams. It is perceived as quite lightweight, but the main thing is that it is thin – 7.4 mm, it is felt from the very first moment you take it in your hands.
The layout of the controls is typical – one microphone at the bottom, right there USB Type C, a 3.5 mm jack, and a speaker output. On the right side there is an on / off button, on the left side there is a volume key, as well as a slot for two nanoSIM cards plus a memory card (it is not combined).
No protection against water is provided, a factory film is glued to the screen (there is de facto no oleophobic coating under it). Unfortunately, the film is quite tough and instantly becomes covered with both small and large scratches.
Silicone case included.
The screen is covered by Corning Gorilla Glass 3, it is more or less resistant to drops, and the construction itself is “soft”, it is plastic. It is more difficult to break the screen here than in metal devices; you will be the first to break the sides of the case.
If we leave out the shining and iridescent colors for brackets, then the model is quite budgetary in design and materials, there are no special flaws. But even the microphone is one, which removes even the very idea of the presence of noise cancellation.
Display
The technical characteristics of the screen are as follows: 6.43 inches, 1080×2340 pixels (19.5: 9), SuperAMOLED, 403 ppi, automatic brightness control, AlwaysOn Display, Corning Gorilla Glass 3, maximum brightness of 400 nits. This is a typical matrix for models of this segment, here gradually the players of the second echelon receive SuperAMOLED, which is welcome, since this allows you to implement the same AoD.
Bright, clear enough matrix. There are no big complaints, everything is readable on the street.
At low brightness, you can turn on DC Dimming, but then the color rendition becomes inaccurate. I expected the screen to support 90 Hz, but this did not happen.
In general, the display is not bad for its class, although it is inferior to similar models from Samsung. The in-screen fingerprint sensor works quickly and without any problems.
Memory, chipset, performance
The basic version of the model was made in such a way that there was no doubt left: a lot of RAM, as well as a lot of built-in memory – 8/128 GB. For many even higher-end models, this is a large amount of memory, and then there is still support for memory cards.
It is customary to treat processors from MediaTek with undisguised disdain, although the same Helio P95 is different in terms of price / quality ratio, shows good performance in synthetic tests.
There are no brakes in the interface, the device is fast enough. Probably, it is not for heavy games and a long game, but it copes with all standard tasks easily and easily.
Battery
The built-in Li-Ion battery has a capacity of 4000 mAh, 18W fast charging is included. Charging time is quite long, in 10 minutes – by 16%, in 30 minutes – by 39%, and in 44 minutes – up to 50%. The full charging time is about 85 minutes.
Traditionally, there are different power saving modes in the settings, but I used the device with the default settings. I liked the fact that it turned out to be tenacious – two or three days of work with moderate use of LTE (250 MB), 3-3.5 hours of screen work. Under load, you get about 6 hours of screen time and one day of work. On the whole, the operating time is the strong point of the model, here we must say thanks to the processor.
Unfortunately, there is no wireless charging, but this is normal for this class of devices.
Communication capabilities
The device has NFC and it is possible to set up Google Pay, there are no problems with that. Navigation works well, grasps coordinates, quickly identifies you on the ground. Yes, and everything is fine with the radio part, I cannot complain about any shortcomings that could be noticeable.
Камеры
The front camera is dual, there is a good blurring of the background when shooting portraits.
The main camera unit is amazing, but it’s more like marketing, since the main module is 48 megapixels (the same as the previous models of the company), wide-angle 8 megapixels, as well as two modules of 2 megapixels each. They take not by skill, but by number. Look how the camera takes pictures, you don’t expect anything special from it, and you don’t get anything.
Sample Photos
The interface has a Pro Expert mode, in which you can enable frame zoom up to 108 megapixels, this is a clear attempt to compete with Xiaomi. There is no reason to shoot at this resolution, the picture will be worse than the original at 48 megapixels. Take a look at examples of images in different resolutions.
Software
The smartphone out of the box runs on the new ColorOS 7, this is a complete copy of the realme UI, the shells are almost identical. To understand what to expect from the interface, check out the realme UI 1.0 overview.
Impressions
There are no complaints about the quality of speech transmission. The ringtone is average or a little worse, the device is not always heard from the clothes. The vibration alert turned out rather weak. In general, the device is woven from compromises, it is not so unambiguous. But this is a typical smartphone in its class, and it has a lot of direct competitors.
For example, you can recall the Poco X3 NFC, this device from Xiaomi is available in 6/128 GB version, but it has a 64-megapixel camera module, a separate macro module, a 5000 mAh battery and Snapdragon 732G. The model is popular in Russia and clearly bypasses the smartphone in question in many aspects.
If you look at the other end of the spectrum, then there is the Samsung Galaxy M31, this device has a similar screen (it is better than the Reno 4 Lite), it has better cameras and a 6000 mAh battery. But the fingerprint sensor is on the back, which may upset someone. The 6/128 GB option costs about 23 thousand rubles, which is lower than the cost of the device in question.
It is impossible to pass by the best in terms of price / quality ratio of the Samsung Galaxy A51 smartphone, it is also the best-selling smartphone in Russia in 2020 among all models. Also an in-screen fingerprint sensor, excellent cameras. The 6/128 GB option costs 21 thousand rubles or so. It is simply impossible to beat this proposal.
With a cost of 25-26 thousand rubles, the Reno 4 Lite does not have much of a chance. On the one hand, there is Poco X3, on the other hand – models from Samsung, they cost much less, benefit from cameras, screen quality, as well as software and overall performance. And the strength of the brand, what can we hide.
The cost of Reno 4 Lite is too high for those characteristics, the filling of the device, the model should cost about 20-22 thousand rubles at the start, the high price makes the device far from ideal. This means that in a very short time, when the model gets stuck in sales, we will see discounts of 3-4 thousand rubles, for this smartphone this is inevitable. Then it will be possible to compare it with the models that I gave above. And then taking into account the fact that they will not receive an additional discount.
