Positioning
In mid-May 2020, Huami (a subsidiary of Xiaomi), which owns the Amazfit brand, released a new fitness gadget in Russia called T-Rex. I deliberately left the term “smart watch”, as the word “smart” implies the installation of applications and extensive capabilities associated with the operating system of the device. In fact, the T-Rex is a fitness bracelet designed in the form of a round watch.
Amazfit T-Rex is the first gadget of the brand, made in a protected case and certified by MIL-STD 810G: it can withstand temperatures from -40 to +70 degrees. Remember, when you get into the oven, your watch will be able to run for about an hour and a half. It is important!
In general, now of the current brands in Russia that produce smartwatches and fitness bracelets for smartphones under the Google Android OS, one can cite Samsung, Huawei, Garmin, Xiaomi and Amazfit as examples.
According to the Svyaznoy company, from January to March of this year, more than 1,4 million fitness trackers and smartwatches were sold in Russia, which is 2019% more than in 54 in physical terms and 43% in monetary terms. And the M.Video retail network says that over the past three years, sales of wearable electronics in Russia have maintained high growth rates – 75-80% per year.
Returning to the Amazfit T-Rex. The cost is 12 rubles.
Graphic Design
I never understood the joke of wearing a huge G-Shock watch on my wrist. It seemed to me that this is from the category of “stylish, fashionable, youthful, but inconvenient.” And then they brought the Amazfit T-Rex to my review: I put it on, wore it for several hours and got used to it so much that other compact watches are already perceived as some kind of strange microscopic devices. Moreover, a large watch on my wrist gave me self-confidence, brutality and even greater masculinity: I immediately began to pump the press and lift weights of poods, and then arrange a swim in the bathroom! Jokes aside, but there is something psychological in it, like driving a healthy “Kruzak”.
The T-Rex gadget is designed in the style of a rugged device with all the important attributes: large and massive design and control elements, aggressive features, appropriate coloring.
However, despite such a description, the watch weighs only 58 grams, that is, it is almost not felt on the wrist. To a large extent also because the bracelet here is silicone: very soft, perfectly stretchable. It feels like you’re wearing stretch jeans. I tested the Huawei Band 4 Pro in parallel with a hard rubber strap, so the Amazfit experience was even brighter. Hmm, but I’m definitely writing now about electronic gadgets? ?
The T-Rex case is made of durable plastic, the buttons and screws are metal, the strap is silicone, and the buckle is plastic again.
The screen is slightly recessed into the case for greater protection from external influences. The lower part of the watch is convex: it fits tightly to the hand with a sensor and its illumination in order to more accurately receive information about the heart rate.
The review was a universal color – black. But there are also gray, camouflage, khaki and army green on sale. I would choose camouflage or khaki for myself, since the rest of the options are pretty familiar.
You can control the watch using both the touch screen and mechanical buttons on the sides of the case. The keys are round, large, the pressing is clear, the travel is firm and minimal, there is a quiet click sound. There will be no accidental clicks here, since the buttons are separated from each other by protruding body elements.
Total: brutal appearance, very easy to use due to its low weight and stretchable silicone strap.

The screen in the T-Rex is neither big nor small when compared to other similar devices. The resolution is low for AMOLED, the picture is not clear on close inspection, and this affects the perception of dials with a shallow interface.
Brightness can be selected either automatic or manual. I set the manual one – the maximum (about 500 cd / m2), since the automation constantly underestimates the values to save energy.
There are no questions indoors, on the street I would like a little more contrast.
The matrix itself is of average quality. This affects color rendition and contrast. For example, Samsung wearable gadgets have these two parameters better. However, the devices themselves are more expensive.
Of course, the display is equipped with a touch layer. Touching works out easily, there were no problems.
In the settings, you can select the screen glow time, activate the backlight by turning your hand, turn on the AOD mode (analog or digital clock). Due to the use of thick glass at the corners of the AOD-time is not important to see.
The glass has a high quality oleophobic coating: prints are completely invisible.
Total: an average screen in all respects with the ability to work in AOD mode.
Working hours
The most controversial parameter in any device. The T-Rex has a 390 mAh battery. For example, in the GTR – 410 mAh.
Official figures: 20 days in intensive mode, 66 days without using a smartphone connection and with a disabled heart rate sensor, 20 hours with a GPS connection.
Since a special self-isolation regime still operates in Moscow, I could not check some of the clock functions. For example, GPS accuracy.
In my use (maximum screen brightness, work 24/7, heart rate measurement in training, 40 minutes of training every day, notifications with vibration) Amazfit T-Rex lived for 14 days.
The watch is charged from a special power adapter, which is magnetized to the back of the device. The charge is about 2 hours.
Dials
I made a separate section, since it is one of the most important for such watches.
There are 30 watch faces in the application settings in the “Theme settings” section. Unfortunately, almost all of them are made in such a way that you don’t even know which one to install, since the design of the “watchfaces” is for a big fan. They are either uninformative, or the information is poorly read for various reasons: small interface, low-contrast arrows or numbers.
It is possible to install third-party ones through amazfitwatchfaces.com. There are many of them.
Notifications
Another important point. You can view messages by swiping from left to right. But it’s best to assign this function to the button at the top right.
You cannot reply to messages, and there are no templates either.
The font of the notification is large and well read. No hyphenation … Emoticons are not displayed. Vibration is average.
I consider the work of notifications during training to be a positive point. That is, you start one of the fitness function modes, watch calories, time, heart rate, and so on, and at the moment of the incoming message you see it on the watch. Most of these devices completely disable the viewing of notifications.
Other watch functions
Swipe from right to left to open the menu:
Status… Information about steps, calories and more.
Heart rate… Measuring heart rate. Measures accurately, checked with other watches and manually. The only drawback is that the device does not signal the completed measurement.
Training… Mode selection. For me, the main thing is that there is an elliptical trainer, walking jogging and just “Training”. The rest is plus or minus typical for any such smart watch.
If you have chosen a program that implies the use of GPS, then when the signal is lost, the watch will vibrate, which distracts you from your workout.
Each of the programs has training goals (distance, calories or time), reminders about classes, automatic pauses (if you suddenly decide to take a break), real-time graphs (most often these are heart rate and pace).
After reaching the goal, the program is not interrupted.
Activity… This is where training data is collected.
Weather… Indication of wind strength, humidity, sunrise or sunset, weather for the whole week
Music… Control volume, rewind and play / pause.
Alarm clock… Set more than five alarms.
Reminders… Indicated in the application.
Yet… It has a compass, stopwatch, countdown and phone search.
Settings… Screen brightness period, quick start (which will be launched if you press the upper right button), “display is always on” (analogue of AOD), “system” (reset, restart and shutdown).
Impression
If you have already owned Amazfit gadgets, then with the T-Rex everything will be simple, since they repeat almost all the functions of the previous generation watches.
The Amazfit T-Rex device is for those who did not want a fashionable accessory like GTR or Stratos, but a large protected gadget with fitness functions. As I wrote earlier, despite its impressive size, the T-Rex is lightweight and easy to use.
At the start of sales, the cost is 12 rubles. In my opinion, it is somewhat overestimated. I would like to around 990 rubles, since Amazfit will have serious competitors: for example, Huawei Watch GT 9e for 000 rubles, regular GT for 2 rubles, GT 10 Sport for 000 rubles and Samsung Watch Active for 10 rubles ( official site). The latter, by the way, are also MIL-STD 000G certified.
However, all of the above devices look like regular watches, and the T-Rex looks like rugged ones. And some part of the audience will give preference to the brutal design of Amazfit.
