Warner Bros. Studio shared the first shots and details of the new film on the Mortal Kombat gaming universe, directed by debutant Simon McQuoid.
In the center of the plot will be a character new to the universe – a mixed martial arts fighter Cole Young (Lewis Tan), who has a mysterious mark in the form of a dragon. When Outworld Emperor Shang Tsung opens a hunt for the hero, he escapes the pursuit of his fighter Sub-Zero, finding himself in the temple of Lord Raiden.
Next, Cole begins training with other fighters to protect the universe. In this case, Cole will have to reveal in himself a certain powerful force of his soul.
The film will touch upon the theme of the confrontation between the Hanzo and Bi-Khan clans, and the prologue will show the origin of enmity during the period of feudal Japan. In the film, in addition to the named characters, will appear: Jax, Sonya Blade, Liu Keng, Kung Lao, Kano, Milena and other fighters known from MK games.
The film will not be related to the 1990s dilogy that Paul W.S. Anderson and John R. Leonetti were involved in. Realistic fights and “Fatalities” are expected, and the rating of the tape will be “from 17 years” (R). The premiere should take place on HBO Max on April 12, and on the 15th the film will be released in Russian cinemas.
