The Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media (Roskomnadzor) announced the extension of measures to slow down Twitter traffic until May 15 this year.
Recall that since March 10, 2021, the department has been using mechanisms to slow down access to Twitter in the country due to the social network’s unwillingness to respond to demands to remove all content recognized as illegal in the Russian Federation. The measures taken affected all mobile devices and half of desktop computers.
“After taking measures to slow down Twitter traffic, the social network removed about 1,9 thousand of the 3,1 thousand materials banned in Russia that have not been deleted since 2017. The site administration has increased the speed of removing illegal content, while the average response time to requests from the regulator is 81 hours. In accordance with Russian law, social networks are given 24 hours from the date of receipt of the notification to delete prohibited information, ” – said in a statement by Roskomnadzor.
Taking into account the decision taken by Twitter to change the principles and speed of its own moderation service in Russia and remove a significant part of the prohibited content, Roskomnadzor decided not to proceed to the next measure – a complete blocking of the service in the country, extending measures to limit Twitter traffic to 15 May. “Thus, the company is given additional time to remove all prohibited content from the social network and bring its activities in full compliance with the legislation of our country,” – notes Roskomnadzor.
