Because of the war in Ukraine, Germany is actively discussing the need to build new bomb shelters.

This issue was raised at the last meeting of the interior ministers of the federal states. BILD published their demands. Thus, the need to build new bunker systems was announced by the Federal Minister of the Interior, Nancy Pfizer.

Baden-Württemberg’s interior minister, Thomas Strobl, called for an examination of the extent to which “underground road and rail systems can accommodate people”.

SPD parliamentary group leader Dirk Wiese called for a “reset” in civil protection, putting the issue at the top of the agenda.

North Rhine-Westphalia’s Interior Minister Herbert Reul said the federal government is studying whether the shelters can still provide effective protection against military threats today.

In 2007, the federal government shut down approximately 2,000 bunkers, it said. Currently, there are about 600 such shelters in Germany. It is estimated that they can only hold 500,000 people. They want to complete their inventory by the spring of 2023.
