In addition, EU leaders agreed to help restore Ukraine’s critical infrastructure to help Ukraine get through the winter.

On Thursday, December 15, 2022, the leaders of the European Union member states agreed to provide Ukraine with 18 billion euros of macro-financial assistance in 2023.

As “European Truth” reports, this is stated in the published conclusions of the European Council. The document emphasizes that the European Union remains committed to providing, together with partners, financial assistance to Ukraine and supporting its sustainability and long-term recovery.

“In this context, the European Union has agreed to provide Ukraine with EUR 18 billion in aid in 2023,” the conclusions state.

In addition, European leaders agreed to “immediately step up humanitarian and civil protection assistance to Ukraine” and help restore Ukraine’s critical infrastructure to help Ukraine get through the winter.

“The European Council proposes to the Commission to strengthen coordination with European industry and international partners in order to ensure a stable supply of priority equipment to Ukraine, such as mobile heating points, power generators, power transformers, as well as high-voltage and lighting equipment,” the conclusions emphasize.

At the same time, the leaders of the EU member states confirmed that they will continue to provide assistance to displaced persons both in Ukraine and outside our country.

Allocation of 18 billion euros for Ukraine: what is known

In early November 2022, the European Union announced its intention to offer Ukraine aid in the amount of up to 18 billion euros.

On December 6, it became known that Hungary blocks the European Union’s provision of a package of macro-financial assistance to Ukraine.

Later, the Hungarian authorities were able to get the European Union to unfreeze part of the money entrusted to it, in exchange for lifting the veto on 18 billion euros of aid to Ukraine. Previously, 7.5 billion euros from EU funds for Hungary were frozen due to problems with the rule of law.

Already on December 13, 2022, all 27 countries of the European Union supported the provision of assistance to Ukraine in the amount of 18 billion euros in 2023 – 1.5 billion euros each month.
