The head of the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine, Herman Galushchenko, said that by 2030, two new power units using American technology will be built at the Khmelnytskyi nuclear power plant.

On the air of the information telethon, the minister said that today, January 20, a decision was made to develop technical documentation for the construction of new type nuclear units.

“Today is an important day in the field of nuclear generation. Today, the government put an end to cooperation with the Russian side in the field of nuclear energy. Before the start of a full-scale war, we terminated all contracts for the supply of fuel from Russia, and today we made a decision to develop technical documentation for the construction of nuclear units of a new type. These are EP1000 reactors of the American company Westinghouse. These units will be built according to American technology,” the minister said.

It is about the construction of nine nuclear units at the Khmelnytskyi NPP. The contract for the construction of five units was concluded in 2021 in the USA between the government of Ukraine and the supplier company. Last year, the number of blocks planned for construction increased to nine.

“Our plans include the construction of two blocks by 2030. The average cost of building one block is approximately 5 billion dollars,” Galushchenko emphasized.

According to him, the construction will be carried out at the expense of credit funds of the Westinghouse company and at the expense of the state enterprise “Energoatom”.
