Iran has accused Israel of recent drone strikes on military targets in the city of Isfahan and threatened to retaliate. This was reported by the Iranian news agency ISNA, through which official Tehran often disseminates its statements.

Iran’s representative at the UN, Amir Saeed, sent an official letter to the organization’s secretary general, in which he declared Israel’s involvement in the January 28 attack.

“The preliminary investigation shows that the Zionist regime is responsible for the terrorist attack on the Ministry of Defense workshop complex in the city of Isfahan, and the actions of this regime violate international law and are condemned,” the letter said.

The Iranian authorities also warned that they retain their “legitimate and inalienable right to defend their national security and respond firmly to any threat” from Israel “wherever and when they deem it necessary.”

It is noteworthy that Ukraine was also mentioned in the letter to the UN Secretary General. Thus, official Tehran claims that its position regarding the war in Ukraine is based “on active neutrality and respect for the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Ukraine.” In this regard, Iran protested against the “provocative and unsubstantiated statement of a high-ranking Ukrainian official” regarding the strikes on Iran on January 28.

“The representative (of Iran at the UN – ed.) called such statements and actions irresponsible and a clear violation of international law and the principles contained in the UN Charter,” the text of the letter is reported by the Iranian news agency.

It is significant that Ukraine is the only country directly mentioned in the letter, apart from Iran itself. Neither the USA nor other countries are mentioned, and Israel is indicated by the euphemism officially used by Tehran, the “Zionist regime”.

Strikes on Iran on January 28

On the night of January 28-29, a series of explosions rang out in Iran. According to media reports, airstrikes, probably drones, were carried out on weapons factories in Isfahan and other provinces.

Iranian authorities said the attack was a failure. Allegedly, one of the drones was shot down by an air defense complex, and the other two fell into defensive traps and exploded.

Commenting on this event, the adviser to the head of the VP Mykhailo Podolyak recalled that Ukraine had previously warned Iran about the danger of aiding Russia in the war against Ukraine. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran was clearly offended by these words.
