On Wednesday last week, Apple announced that it is in the midst of a major solar energy storage project. As it turns out, the California Flats Solar Farm solar farm will use Tesla batteries.
The project, which was recently disclosed, was approved by the Monterey County Board of Supervisors back in 2020, according to published documents. A total of 85 units of Tesla Megapack lithium-ion batteries will be used in the storage system. The stored energy will be used to power the Apple headquarters in Cupertino.
The Monterey County Planning Officer confirmed in an email to The Verge’s request that Apple will use Tesla batteries. However, Apple and Tesla did not give any comments to the publication.
Tesla Megapack batteries were announced back in 2019. Apple’s installation will be able to store up to 60 MW of energy. But this is not a record yet, in 2019 Tesla built similar battery systems in Australia and Texas. They can both contain up to 100 MW of energy.
However, Apple is positioning this unit as one of the largest battery system projects in the United States. According to them, the installation can supply more than 7000 homes with electricity throughout the day. Most importantly, the megapacks will be able to contain all the energy that is generated at the Calinfornia Flats solar farm. The total capacity of the solar panel installation reaches 130 MW.
