Gartner predicts that the base of in-use computing devices will grow steadily over the coming years. The ongoing pandemic will act as a catalyst for the global market.
Gartner analysts take into consideration various types of personal computers (desktops, laptops and ultrabooks), tablets, and smartphones.
It is estimated that a total of 6,08 billion of these types of devices were in use globally last year. Of these, about 4,3 billion were smartphones. Desktop PCs and laptops accounted for 522 million and 796 million units, respectively. Another 479 million are tablets.
This year, the number of operated computer devices will increase. This will be facilitated by the development of platforms for distance learning and remote work.
According to the results of 2021, analysts believe that the base of used computers will reach 6,22 billion. This, in particular, more than 4,3 billion smartphones, 495 million desktops, 866 million laptops and 535 million tablets.
Growth will continue in 2022, with the base of in-service computing devices expected to expand to 6,42 billion units.
