The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) reported that the InSight lander again recorded two strong seismic shocks on Mars.
Strong tremors with magnitudes of 3,3 and 3,1 were recorded in the Cerberus Fossil area last month, but the space agency has just reported this.
The InSight spacecraft has been on the surface of Mars since 2018 and at the beginning of its mission it has already recorded two cases of significant “Marsquake” in the same area with magnitudes 3,6 and 3,5. The new tremors are further evidence that the area is prone to seismic activity.
In fact, during its stay on Mars, the probe recorded more than 500 cases of seismic activity, but the four above are of particular interest to scientists due to the relatively large magnitude indicator.
According to scientist Taichi Kawamura of the Paris Institute of Physics of the Earth (Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris – UniversitĂ© de Paris), the mission observed two types of “Marsquakes” – similar to those on the Earth, and similar to those occurring on the Moon. He noted that the four largest seismic shocks were especially interesting in that they are more similar to the earth.
