Cisco has announced the development of infrastructure-independent, password-free Duo authentication, which is expected to provide secure access to a variety of resources, including cloud services.
It is noted that the use of traditional passwords is fraught with many problems: they, in particular, are easy to compromise and difficult to manage. In addition, requests for password recovery account for the lion’s share of support requests, which translates into wasted time and additional financial costs.
The Duo Passwordless Authentication solution is seamlessly integrated into the existing Duo authentication system and is based on the use of security keys and biometric data. The latter can be filmed using sensors integrated into modern laptops and smartphones.
The new system is versatile: it provides secure access for any user from any device to any IT application in any environment. It talks about compatibility with Apple’s FaceID, TouchID, and Windows Hello technologies. Companies will not have to change their infrastructure to implement the system. The web authentication standard WebAuthn is used, based on asymmetric encryption and allows you to safely store and verify biometrics locally on the device itself, without a centralized database.
«The solution is infrastructure agnostic and paves the way for a password-free future. It provides seamless protection for any combination of cloud and on-premises enterprise applications without requiring multiple authentication products and leaving no critical security holes“- says Cisco. Duo Passwordless Authentication will begin open testing this summer.
