Change drive letter in Windows 10

Windows automatically assigns an available drive letter to connected internal and external storage devices. You, in turn, can change the drive letter and in today’s article we will consider how to do this in various ways.

Windows assigns letters alphabetically from A to Z. A and B are reserved for floppy disks. The letter C can only be used for the drive on which Windows is installed. Using the methods below, you can change the letter for the drive or assign a letter if the system for some reason did not assign it itself.

Changing the drive letter in Disk Management.

Earlier, we already looked at disk management in detail and there was how to change or assign a drive letter, these actions almost did not change in different versions of Windows.

1.Open Disk Management: right-click on the “Start” menu and select “Disk Management” from the listed tools, or press the Win + r keys and in the run line write diskmgmt.msc then click “OK”.

2. Right-click on the drive for which you want to change the letter and select “Change drive letter or drive path”.

3.In this window, you can add a letter if it is not there, delete a letter, or change a letter. Select “Change”.

4. Opposite “Assign Drive Letter …” select any available letter you want to assign.

5. Click “OK”.

6.If you installed any programs or games on this disk, they may stop starting and you will need to change the shortcut for them, or reinstall them altogether. If you don’t mind, click “Yes”.

The drive letter has been changed, you can close Disk Management.

Change the drive letter on the command line.

1.Open a command prompt as administrator: one of the ways to open it is to right-click on the Start menu and select Command Prompt (Administrator).

2.Enter the command Diskpart and press Enter.

3. Enter the List volume and press Enter. A list will appear with all available volumes, find your own in the list and remember its number. For example, we want to change the letter for D disk, in the picture you see that “Volume 3” is written in front of it, remember the number and go to the next item.

4. Enter the command select volume 3 and press Enter (instead of 3 you substitute the number of your volume, which you learned in the previous paragraph).

5. Enter the command assign letter = letter and press Enter. Instead letter you need to put the letter you want to assign to the selected drive. For example, we change the disk on F, and we have already followed the previous steps of the instructions above, we enter the command assign letter = F and press Enter. As a result, it should write “Assigning the name of the drive or mount point was successful”. You can close the command line.

Change drive letter in PowerShell

1.Open PowerShell as administrator: one of the ways is to write PowerShell in the search bar and right-click on the result found, select “Run as administrator”.

2. Enter the Get-Partition and press Enter.

3. The main thing for you from the previous paragraph is to find out the drive letter that you want to change. For example, we want to change the drive letter from F onthen you need to write a command Get-Partition -DriveLetter F | Set-Partition -NewDriveLetter D and press Enter (you change the letters in the command to your own).

If you don’t see any errors, just close the PowerShell window.

Change the drive letter in Registry Editor.

1. Open the registry editor: in the search bar or in the execute menu (execute is called by the win + r keys) write regedit and press Enter.

2.In the left column, go to the section HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEM MountedDevices. When a section is selected in the left column MountedDevices in the right column you will see all available drives.

3. Click on the parameter with the drive letter that you want to change with the right mouse button and select “Rename”. For example, we rename the D drive, click on the parameter DosDevices D: right-click and select “Rename”.

4. We only change the letter! We leave the rest, that is, after renaming, for example, to disk F, the parameter will look like DosDevicesF:

After renaming the parameter, you need to close the registry editor and for the changes to take effect, restart the computer.

That’s all for today, if you have any additions – write comments! Good luck ?
