Windows 10 has a “Memory Sense” feature that automatically frees up disk space according to the options you choose. Previously, we looked at how to enable and configure it in the system settings. Today we will look at how to enable or disable Memory Sense to automatically free up disk space for all users in Windows 10.
Enable or disable Memory Sense in Group Policy
This method works in Windows Pro, Enterprise or Education, if you have a home version, go to the next method.
1. In the search bar or in the Run menu (Win + R) enter gpedit.msc and press the Enter key.
2. Go to “Computer Configuration” => “Administrative Templates” => “System” => “Memory Sense” => open “Allow Memory Sense”.
3. To enable all users “Memory Sense” and prohibit its disabling in the system settings, put a full stop in the “Enabled” field and click on “OK”.
To disable Memory Sense for all users and prevent it from being enabled in the system settings, put a full stop in the Disabled field and click OK.
Close the Local Group Policy Editor.
Enable or disable memory monitoring in Registry Editor
1. In the search bar or in the Run menu (Win + R), enter the command regedit and press Enter.
2. Follow the path HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftWindowsStorageSense, if the Windows section does not have a StorageSense section – right-click on it, select “New” => “Section” => name the new section StorageSense
3. Click on the section Storage Sense right-click, select “New” => “DWORD Parameter (32 bit) => name the new parameter AllowStorageSenseGlobal
4. Open the parameter AllowStorageSenseGlobal, in the “Value” field enter 0 and click on “OK” if you want to disable “Memory Sense” for all users and prohibit enabling in the system settings, or in the “Value” field enter 1 and click on “OK” if you want to enable “Memory Sense” for all users and prohibit shutdown in the system settings. Close the registry editor.
