The PIN history indicates the number of previous PINs associated with a user account that cannot be reused. This policy setting allows administrators to improve security by ensuring that old PINs are not permanently reused. The PIN history is not saved when you reset the PIN. Today we will look at how to enable (disable) PIN history in Windows 10.
Enable (disable) PIN history in group policies
This method works in Windows Pro, Enterprise or Education, if you have a home version, go to the next method.
1. Open Group Policy: in the search bar or in the Run menu (run by pressing Win + R) enter gpedit.msc and press the Enter key.
2. Follow the path Computer Configuration Administrative Templates System PIN Complexity => open the parameter “Magazine”.
3. Put a dot next to “Enabled” (Disabled) => next to “History of PIN-codes” select how many PIN-codes to remember => click on “OK”. Close the Local Group Policy Editor and restart your computer for the changes to take effect.
Enable (disable) PIN history in Registry Editor
1. In the search bar or in the “Run” menu (run by pressing the Win + R keys) enter regedit and press the Enter key.
2. Follow the path HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Policies Microsoft PassportForWork PINComplexity. If the Microsoft section does not have a PassportForWork section – right-click on the Microsoft section, select New => Section => name the new section PassportForWork
Right click on the PassportForWork section, select “New” => “Section” => name the new section PINComplexity
3. Click on the section PINComplexity right-click, select “New” => “DWORD Parameter (32 bit)” => name the new parameter History
4. Open the parameter History => select the decimal number system and enter in the “Value” field how many PIN-codes to remember => click on “OK”.
